Please, please, Americans (and people from any other country that allows it): Find a lawyer right away and get yourselves a Living Will.

OMG, yes, please get one. Both my husband and I have one and my parents (and his) know our wishes. Isn't it sickening how such a private family matter has been politicized? And what the federal government is doing is simply appalling. This is a decision that has been set by the state court. That the federal government would be so arrogant as to completely disregard this is alarming and disgusting. Equally disgusting are the activists that stand around the exterior of the hospice and plan to go mull around the husband's house. This. Is. Not. Your. Business. Leave this family alone to cope with this tragic situation.

The real tragedy is that nobody really knows what the woman's wishes really are. No matter what's been decided, either decision could have been the opposite of what she wanted. It's very sad.

Great Advice!

Everyone MUST have a living will AND a Health Proxy in place. Even at my young age (49), I've had both for 15 years; Songdog is currently my authorized "plug puller."

Please spare your families the anguish of trying to guess your wishes. Write it all down and get it notorized... NOW!!

Also, specify which plug you want pulled. A feeding tube is NOT life-support. You can have a DNI order along with your DNR one, but once that tube is in, it's in, and an order to take someone off life-support will not necessarily guarantee that the feeding tube is pulled. Of course, it most likely works the other way, as well. There's no guarantee that a g-tube will not be pulled, either, through one of these court orders. People need to be specific.
