I'm becoming more like Full Spectrum's Draco. I keep collecting quotes.

Here's one, in light of the Newsweek kerfuffle:

Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.

-Thomas Jefferson, 1787.

Really, America. It's okay if we protest the media, but when our government does it, calling for retractions and resignations, isn't that taking away our freedom of speech?

My opinion (you knew you were going to get it, now weren't you? Bwah) is that if the White House is going to call for the resignation of members of the press and retraction of an article because they made mistakes (which are that the source is questionable and not that the allegations are untrue), why aren't we calling for the resignation of the president and the Secretary of Defense, who sent our kids to die in Iraq under false intelligence at best and a lie at worst?

It's strange (or not) that the whole demand for retraction and resignation is coming out just in time to make us forget about the Downing Street Memo? Could the apathy the US is showing surroundint this be because Dubya, Karl and the boys just threw us a bone in the other direction?
