Okay, so this is mostly for [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl, because sharing is caring:

Oh Brian, you pretty, pretty loser.

I've yet to see all of this. And there it is sitting on my hard drive. I'm really good at putting off watching stuff I want to watch, which makes no sense.

Oh, man, I know. You would not believe the stuff I have lying around unwatched. This is why I hit the chats -- it forces me to see things.

Have you seen H20 yet? [livejournal.com profile] h20_wtf is planning a viewing/chat in the near future.

I've missed the Saturday chats because I work every other Saturday and on the non-working ones always seem to be somewhere that's not home. :/

Nnnnope. Don't seem to own that one.

Boo, working weekends. =/

Of course I care. I care so much I even watched it a bunch of times to make sure the picture quality was acceptable. Nothing but the best for you, dear. *beams*

I downloaded this video to my computer some time ago.
I watch it. Often.

YouTube is a nice thing indeed!
I also downloaded "Cowboy take me away". If I can't watch "Buffalo Jump", I can enjoy the music video at least. :-)

You haven't seen it? This just will not do.

Wow, what an amazing thing to wake up to on a Sunday morning!

Finally, I see the appeal of fanvids.

I'd forgotten what a scary fucker Paul was in that movie. Good Vid though and great choice of music with it.

Starting at about -2:30 is one of the most disturbing and also the most impressive twenty seconds of acting I've seen anyone do. I've been meaning to rewatch this for ages; I really should do it. Paul needs to be a bad guy more often.

It would be nice if TPTB would release the film on DVD. It's not like nobody would buy it. :/

[identity profile] bjohan57.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
There's that scene but also the one where he's faking the range of emotions in the corridor while his wife is curled-up sobbing. Yikes! There's a great actor for you.

And no, I doubt they'll release it on DVD unless Passchendaele unexpectedly wins 17 Oscars, and the world is clamouring for the rest of his work.

No doubt I'll have to rewatch this. I haven't seen it in a while and actually haven't gotten completely through it (almost, almost, though). I also want to read the book.

And no, I doubt they'll release it on DVD unless Passchendaele unexpectedly wins 17 Oscars, and the world is clamouring for the rest of his work.

H20
is a TV movie, too, and it was released. But then, that's the CBC, and for all the issues they have with promoting their programming, they do put their stuff out on DVD.

[identity profile] bjohan57.livejournal.com 2007-11-20 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well when they invest C$8 million in something, you can be damn sure it'll be released on DVD. Since they gave him $10 million for TJ though, I imagine it must have made the money back.

I'd love to see a financial breakdown of how they recapped their money.

I actually have a copy of MML that someone sent me that's a copy of a DVD recorded directly from television, which should be better quality than the ones copied from videocassettes. If I have time today I'll take a look so I can rip it before [livejournal.com profile] mr_t00by heads back to school and takes his DVD burner with him (the burner on my computer is FUBAR, alas).

Mostly in-programme advertising revenue I imagine. As the movie had a great 1.98 million viewers per evening, and had an hour's worth of adverts in each segment, then a lot of the finance would have been recouped from that.
The DVD sold pretty well as well, apparently (according to Paul), so that would have added about a million or so as well. Add in selling to other countries - remember that it won a Monte Carlo prize - which would have recouped back another million or two, so there you have:

Happy CBC = Happy CBC Programme Commissioner = Happy Paul = Happy Alberta (filming location for TJ) = Happy Albertan Government = Happy Passchendaele funding = Even Happier Paul.

I may have been making up those last few bits, but it's a nice story.

;-)

Did Alberta shell out any more than the $4 million grant and the tax credit? They're going to make out very well, if you ask me, what with jobs and publicity and stuff.

[identity profile] bjohan57.livejournal.com 2007-11-20 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
They are - in fact, I would bet that they have already made back their investment, even before the movie is released. They absolutely had to make back their investment as part of the deal - when was the last time any Government gave anything away for free or because "it was the right thing to do"? :)
I'm guessing the reason why TJ was filmed mostly in Alberta was part of the Passchendaele deal as well. But I do tend to be overly cynical about the juxtaposition between politics and finance, so I could be wrong.

Well, seeing that it was mostly all seen to under Ralph Klein, who doesn't strike me as Mister Integrity on a GOOD day, I wouldn't be at all surprised.

What I want to know is, why do I find skanky CKR appealing (e.g. wossname from Last Night, and even wossname from Slap Shot 2), but skanky Paul Gross is right out?

[identity profile] primroseburrows.livejournal.com 2007-11-19 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
I classify this more in the 'dorky Paul Gross' category, actually. I don't think there's such a thing as skanky Paul Gross, because the dork factor takes over first. But then I have yet to see the series.

I'm not sure how I feel about skanky CKR, because so many of his characters are dead criminals in the first place, and criminal-types are usually pretty skanky.

I haven't ever rewatched this series. So seeing Parker Posey, Jeanene Garofolo (I am mispelling her name) and Laura Linney all with Paul? SO JEALOUS! Except that I still maintain that he is WAY more attractive now with all of his wrinkles and laugh lines. He looks like a Ken doll in this video! thanks for sharing.

Oh, absolutely (although I'd say Paul has more laugh lines than actual wrinkles). Give me Tom McLaughlin over Brian Hawkins any day. Not that I've seen all of ToTC, like I said. ;)

We could start a branch of pg fandom called the laughline club? I like that!

Well, if the people who join are required to have laughlines, too, I'm bound to get in. ;)
