For Canada Day, a lyrics meme. Guess the song/artist.

All lyrics from songs written and/or sung by Canadian artists:

1. When the sun turns traitor cold and all the trees are shivering in a naked row
2. I will give you all I could ever give, though it's less than you will need
3. I can tell by the big spuds on the back of your rig you must be a spud picker from Prince Edward Island.
4. On the other side of Winnipeg, Neil and the Squires played the Zone
5. I'm junk but I'm still holding up this little wild bouquet
6. You took advantage of a world that loved you well
7. I am your brilliance and frustration
8. And I gotta catch a noon train, gotta be there on time
9. And the rum was better and it came in bigger bottles and the revenue cutters were slow
10. Sweating like a weather’s vein, coughing thunder, sneezing rain
11. Well, I've got twenty dollars and I know that it can get us by the door
12. Security couldn't get her down, she was welded to the eagle's beak
13. But without him how would Hitler have condemned him at Dachau?
14. A thousand sharpened elbows in the underground
15. Here by my side, a new colour to paint the world

I should have one of these for the Fourth of July, unless the sky falls. Since I'm feeling less lazy, I'm off to write and stuff.

#13: "Universal Soldier" by Donovan

You got the first part right. Donovan (who is Scots, IIRC) covers it, but who wrote it?

#8: Sweet City Woman - The Stampeders

I hadn't thought of that song in years ... I ran right to iTunes and got a copy. :)

It's one of the first songs I remember hearing on the radio, back when top 40 was all on AM. Good stuffs.

#15 - Weapon, Matthew Good Band

[identity profile] tarimanveri.livejournal.com 2008-07-02 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, I fail at being Canadian. I know all the folk songs though, I swear...

I'm sure #3 is by Stompin' Tom Connors, but I don't know what it's called. The Potato Song?

[identity profile] primroseburrows.livejournal.com 2008-07-02 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. And no, it's not 'Bud the Spud'.

Hint: The original song was written by an Australian and made famous by an American. Tom added extra lyrics to make it Canadian. Like you do. :)

[identity profile] tarimanveri.livejournal.com 2008-07-02 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
Alas, that's all I have. Or at least, without googling. I was probably thinking of "Bud the Spud." I've never actually heard it, or any other Stompin' Tom up to and including "The Hockey Song," though. I need a traditional Canadian folksong version, maybe with a little Stan Rogers and Ian and Sylvia and Joni Mitchell and Great Big Sea thrown in. I could rock that...

there might be some Stan Rogers and some Joni on the list

[identity profile] tarimanveri.livejournal.com 2008-07-02 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
But my familiarity with their work might be limited to Fogarty's Cove and Blue...

#2 is "For You" by the Barenaked Ladies. One of my favorites!

6. You took advantage of a world that loved you well

I think I'll give you that one for mere enthusiasm, because obviously you know it. :D

*headdesk* apparently my enthusiasm impaired my ability to read instructions. "Going to a Town" FTW, heh.

Yep. You guys are GOOD.

OMG I so totally failed this quiz. I don't think I recognize one lyric.

I bet you will when I post the answers. Lyrics seem different out of context and without the music, and all.

Maybe you'll (paradoxically? ironically?) do better on my Amerikan meme.

[identity profile] eltonroo.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I am ashamed to call myself a Canadian. The only obvious one to me is #8 which is Sweet City Woman by the Stampeders (who by the way I saw in person at a high school dance!)
#11 feels like Joni Mitchell but not sure.
And is #3 Bud the Spud by Stompin Tom?

[identity profile] primroseburrows.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
#8 is right, #1 is Joni, and #3 is Stompin' Tom, but not 'Bud the Spud'. :)

[identity profile] songdog.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
1.)(Some song) by Joni Mitchell
3.) I've Been Everywhere, Stompin' Tom Connors
5.) Democracy, Leonard Cohen
8.) Sweet City Woman, Stampeders
12.) Sun Green, Neil Young (only one of my favorite Neil songs!!)
13.) Universal Soldier, Donovan

1. Yep, but guess the song. *g*
3, 5, 8, and 12. Yep.
13. Song is right, but Donovan, not being Canadian, doesn't fit the criteria for the artist. Who originally wrote/recorded it?
