Also, question for you guys: What's your favourite album (erm. That's a recording on vinyl. Some of you may remember the big round black things with the little hole in the middle. Oh, and yes, dmbgrl1026, you could turn them over. *gg*)?

Why is it your favourite? Go into detail--I love hearing it, and I might discover some new music, which is always A Good Thing.

Mine's Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy by Elton John, and has been for the last OMG 29 years. Because? It's the most complete album I've ever heard, for one. It's the story of Elton and Bernie and their budding friendship and writing partnership (and I never really think of it being an 'Elton John album'. It's an Elton-and-Bernie album). What exudes from the songs, every one of them, is complete, bonding friendship and love. I get happy whenever I hear it, and I've yet to turn it off because I'm tired of it. If I could pick one album to take to the proverbial Desert Island, it'd be this one. I love every. single. track.

Nostalgically, the album reminds me of warm Summer days in 1975, newly fourteen and swimming in the backyard pool with my friend Tina, walking to the candy store, listening to Sox games on the transistor, looking ahead to the first school year ever that I didn't dread, sitting in my bedroom with the comic-book style bio of Elton and Bernie from the LP (you can't get that with the CD version!), letting myself be carried away by the music and the voice and dreaming, dreaming. I think of the countless thousands of times I must have listened to this beautiful thing and I listen again, and remember, and dream anew.

Lastly, but very much not least, today would have been John Lennon's sixty-fourth birthday. *raises glass with so much love and admiration* You're sorely missed, sai Lennon. If ever we needed you, we need you now.

I think my favourite album might be Zappa and the Mothers' Freak Out!, because I was utterly fascinated by the album art as a child. (It was my dad's, I believe.) The music itself scared the crap out of me, in a good way...

On the other hand, I was a record collector at a young age even in the time of CDs. At the collectors' record store I'd wind up working at nine years later, I never forgot about being teased by the clerks for buying Chic, Donna Summer, the Michael Zager Band, Andrea True, and a million other scary dollar disco records. :}

I know I'm weird, but I really like your stories about the '70s. Perhaps because I'm a seventiesphile, but I wasn't there to experience it...

I guess I have a lot of seventies!nostalgia. I never realised that. Sometimes I have to shake myself and tell myself in no uncertain terms to live in the present!.

As for Zappa, he's one of those artists that I wish I'd gotten more into. I think I may in the future, because it's undeniable that the guy was brilliant.

It's unfortunate that I can't remember one song from there, but I do remember playing it, A LOT!

Tis sad but I didnot bring any of my albums with me when I got married; I always said that I'd get them "someday". Well, someday has come and gone, and I still don't have them. Hubbies got a lot though, but we need a good needle to play them (his is about 30+ yrs old).

One album I do remember liking a lot was I think the first album that Tracy Chapman ever made. I was in the Harvard Coop, and I heard her music being played, and fell in love with it; which was odd, cause I usually only went for pop stuff. I played her album over and over. Can't remember the name of it either. Loved it though.

OH, I love your seventies notalgia! Ilived through it too, but can't remember it!! (and no, not from drugs, but jsut plain old age!!)

Sgt. Pepper's.

Which I got to listen to yesterday, after not hearing it for years. <3333

As my father says, Sgt. Pepper's is one of the arguments against CD covers. It's also, IMO, one of the arguments against downloading 'just' the songs you want.

I mean, there are songs alone that I like more than any individual song on that album. But for overall album effect... yeah. The only one that even comes close is Tommy, and that's kind of different anyway.

Captain Fantastic is like that. You have to hear the whole album. I mean, yeah, you could listen to "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" ad nauseum by itself and after a while you'd feel like gagging if you had to hear it again. But, in the overall effect, with the whole album, it's wonderful.

U2, "The Joshua Tree". It was exactly what I needed at that point in my life. I still find every song poetic perfection. FYI, I'm just discovering the brilliance of Dave Brubeck and at the moment, I am playing "Our Farewell" by Within Temptation, just totally sobbing my eyes out. Why? Apparently, God thinks it's time for me to reminisce and wonder about roads not taken and miss those left behind. What a downer.
