When you see this, post a bit of poetry in your own journal.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all convictions, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

...And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

One of my favorites, if only for the phrase "mere anarchy".

I think it's one of the most intense poems ever written. And it rings true in these times. *shudder*

Oh, God, Yeats, I die; how I love him. This poem in particular blows my doors off. As testimony to its incredibleness, I can name two books at least that have taken their titles from it.

Prim, you might be interested to know that I'm taking this incredibly groovy course this semester called "How to Read Hebrew Poetry." It's a study of biblical poetry, but to get at the various poetic techniques, we also study a wide range of English-language poetry. It's excellent.

Okay, I'm going to post poetry in my LJ now, as directed. :)

Correction: three books that have taken their titles from this poem.
