Midwifery? How cool!
Date: 2005-04-14 06:36 am (UTC)Having no friends who were having babies, and no interest in having them myself, I went to college and got all the way through my nursing prerequisites.
While at said college I booked speakers for the Women's Center on campus, and got a group of midwives to come speak about the work of midwifery. That was when I learned that as a midwife I would be pretty much working for myself, sharing practice with a physician. I was pretty nervous about that idea, and decided that I didn't want to work for myself.
So I became a professional musician instead, and switched my educational focus to ethnomusicology.
True story. The irony escaped me at the time, but it's amusing to look back on.

Date: 2005-04-14 10:28 am (UTC)I've never heard about this regarding the Seattle School; hopefully they've changed their tune a bit--I've heard good things about them.
I've been accepted at the National Midwifery Institute. I'm just waiting for my acceptance letter and info to get started.

When I gave birth to my son (in 1990) I would have been attended by the midwife who had supervised my care during pregnancy, except she was on vacation that week! As it turned out, we followed my carefully developed birth plan, went through each progressive step and ended with a c-section. Which after 36 hours of labor, I was ready to perform myself. Give me the scissors!
So... best of luck with that! I love it when they approach pregnancy and childbirth as a normal, healthy activity rather than a serious medical condition that is treated like an illness. Much better paradigm, IMHO.
