This letter is one of the best I've read, from a mother who loves her son. It affects me on a number of levels--also as a mother who also loves her kids, and as someone who's been bullied and beaten on for being different (although not for the same reasons).

It's five years old, but it doesn't matter.

Or, as the real variant on that bumper sticker read, Take Vermont Forward. Don't mean to put a regional spin on it but this gave me a lot of Vermont pride.

A very well written letter, to say the least. To deny someone their dignity and self respect for something so trivial as sexual preference (which is just not ever anyone's business in the first place) is beyond cruel, and might I offer that to be homophobic (or phobic against any lifestyle that is ultimately harmless to individuals or the general public or the fabric of the populace) is anti-American. First of all, we all have our own personal beliefs and opinions and we all are entitled to them, but in the end, it's up to none of us to judge anyone other than ourselves. None of us has the right to tell others how to live their lives. It's called the pursuit of happiness, people, and its definition is unique to every individual. People revere the idea of what Declaration of Independence says, but I wonder how many have read it top to bottom. I wonder how many people really understand what it says and what it means. I wonder how many actually *apply* its ideals into their lives. A long time has passed since it was written and the United States is a much more complicated place. It's a much more complicated world. But. The Declaration's ideals, it's spelling out of what is NOT acceptable to the spirit of the American people will remain true and the American people NEED to read this document regularly to remind themselves of what they are, to remind themselves that we are all brothers in this one nation under God (Yes, I said it. Pffft.) despite any lawful and harmless lifestyle choice.

Rant away, dear. I'm a big fan of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution (especially the First Amendment).

I take one exception, though.

If it were a choice, I know plenty of people who wouldn't make it, because of the bashing and discrimination and killing and all. Gay people are born gay, as more and more evidence is proving. As one gay co-worker said to me, "who would want to choose a lifestyle where you're constantly discriminated against?"
