I highly recommend this piece from NPR:

NPR - My Lobotomy.

It's told by a man who had a transorbital lobotomy at age twelve, and his search for closure and answers today, at age fifty-six.

There's more information here, and a Fresh Air piece on the doctor who performed the procedure here.

Very interesting (and sometimes touching) stuff.

The Fresh Air article gets kudos for (of course) mentioning The Ramones.

I heard that today, whilst I was driving through the streets of downtown, until they got to the part where Dr. Freeman had lobotomized a woman for postpartum depression, and hence she'd spent the rest of her life in mental hospitals and now is in a nursing home. :( I just couldn't keep listening at that point.

So, yeah, I finally found an NPR station in Atlanta that comes in!

Yes. I worked in nursing homes and state hospitals for the better part of a decade. I met lots of women that had been (permenantly) institutionalized for post partum depression. Horrible.
