Yay!

I now have the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack. It's all country songs and lovely acoustic instrumentals. It's got Willie and Steve Earle and Rufus (RUFUS!) among others, and Emmylou singing a brand-new song with lyrics by none other than my Bernie.

Keeping on topic, I do not understand this, from here:

The "Brokeback" musical choices are as intriguing as the movie's plot. For example, while "A Love that Will Never Grow Old" is a brand-new song by Santaolalla and Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin, it would be nice to know if it was written specifically for the soundtrack of a film that tells the story of two men who fall in love -- and, if so, why a woman was chosen to sing the song.

Um? Because Emmylou Harris has the most amazing voice pretty much ever, that's why, and it fits the song very well.

Well, isn't it obvious? Women should be kept as far away from homosexual love stories as possible. Men who fall in love don't need girls. Ew.

Sigh. Why are people so...silly? That's not even significant. I am baffled as to why it needed to be commented on at all. As you say, the choice of artist to perform the song was probably based on, oh, I don't know, her talent and the suitability of her voice for the music, rather than whether or not her bits are appropriately meaningful.

I suppose it could be carried even further--why did they ask Bernie Taupin to write the song? So what if he's a brilliant poet? He's straight, Oh Em Gee!

For that matter, why not get Rupert Evert and RuPaul to play Jack and Ennis? [/sarcasm]

Perhaps the reviewer has forgotten that the original story was written by--get ready--a woman!
