so tonight I set a vigil and my shadow's all that's cast

Commentary on the Kinetic Aesthetics of One S.R. Kowalski, CPD, and, By Association, Callum Keith Rennie:

Y'know, you can't tell me that this scene wasn't choreographed, because if Callum can do that without the music, then he's not just talented, he's some kind of alien moving thing (the jury is actually still deliberating on this idea).

Which means it must have been rehearsed and rehearsed, with the music. Which is probably why it's so, um. Well, just LOOK at it. Because some things just connect.

This has been a PSA brought to you by CKR, Hugh Dillon, and my own weird, overactive brain. No actual Real People were harmed in the making of this flight of fantasy.

P.S. For those of you who've never heard the music as a whole lovely thing, here you go:

The Headstones - Cubically Contained

Gorgeous thing, so it is.

This song (from the tiny snippet in the scene) was my intro to the band, and to the sheer poetry of Hugh Dillon.
My inner music!geek was all, FIND OUT WHAT THIS IS AND WHO RECORDED IT.

NOW, KID.

I always listen to my inner music!geek. She is far wiser than I.

As for Hugh, I heart him. With BIG GIANT FLUFFY RED HEARTS THAT HE'D HATE.

Wow! That's just amazing! I don't know how I failed to notice that before.

I wonder if Callum knew they'd be using the song for this scene, and was hearing it in his head and all but dancing to it?

Holy... wow.

And oh, god, how I love that song. When Hugh Dillon is on his game, he's a freaking genius, and I don't think he's ever been better than in this song -- both lyrics and execution.

He must have known. I wouldn't be surprised if it was his idea in the first place.

My theory is that it was choreographed. Maybe not with actual steps and all, but more like, "Okay, cue music," and hello, improv. Which? Callum isn't just good at, he's infamous for doing on a dime.

Also, this is one of the best songs about addiction I've heard in ever. I mean, geez:

I set a dozen 12-step traps; they slip by every one
I never catch the little bastards, I really do wish that they'd own up
Those paranoid little fuckers take their paranoid little time
and when the moon rolls in,they're like a bank robbin' and i'm a hostage who will drive

Can't get more honest than that, if you ask me. But who asked me? *g* And why, yes. I have reposted this comment about a million times because LJ won't let me edit it. :/

That's entirely possible. Lenz made a point of using as much Canadian music as possible (and had already used a Headstones track in S1), so he probably would've been receptive if Callum suggested using another one.

Oh, yes. A lot of Hugh's music is about addiction and recovery -- including, I believe, more than half of Nickels and most of Oracle -- which is one reason it has such tremendous resonance for me.

apocalypse is now, buyable and takeable; dreams are applicable as well

OMG, the title song from Nickels.

I think it's my favourite of anything he's written. It's really not about addiction, but it is in a way, because it's (at least partly) about money and status and giving up everything to keep them. Which is exactly what addiction is. And the voice. And he says "possibly". Hugh saying "possibly" is fecking foreplay, as far as I'm concerned. But then I'm really sort of odd. *g*

What I can't figure out is why can't I get the lyrics anywhere online? Like anywhere. I've looked a lot.

I haven't found those lyrics online yet, either. I've been gradually transcribing lyrics from the liner notes, but I hadn't got to Nickels yet.

When I do, I'll shoot you a copy.

And the voice. And he says "possibly". Hugh saying "possibly" is fecking foreplay, as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, I SO hear you. Voice porn is my biggest bulletproof kink. Hugh's voice is purest porn. (As is Paul Gross's.)

I need to get hard copies of so many albums I only have (and some only parts of) in mp3 format. Yay for lyrics!

Paul's voice is even better when accompanied by the visual. Because um. Paul's mouth is like some kind of impossibly beautiful work of art that someone just made up one day or something. He also says "possibly" very nicely, say thankya.

Paul's mouth is porn elevated to a high art, especially when combined with his voice and diction. His Ps and Ks alone are enough to get me halfway to orgasm.

mnrghf *is* a word, dammit.

His Ps and Ks alone are enough to get me halfway to orgasm.

Then there's that surreptitious lip-licking thing that takes care of the other half is very nice, also.

I actually was going to wax poetic about Paul and consonants, but I managed to stop myself. It was tough.

But clearly, some kind of natural laws are being broken.

...I just chalked it up to really good editing. I'm not seeing the choreography.

Maybe 'choreography' is the wrong word. More like that it was rehearsed with the music. It really does almost look like dancing to me. *shrugs*

The whole point of making this clip in the first place was to show off Callum's kinesthetic loveliness. Stills don't always do him justice; sometimes the whole combo is necessary. It's also a good thing that computer technology isn't the same as vinyl recordings, or I'd have worn this clip out a long time ago. *g*

Ha. If you're talking about how when he walks it's like sex, then yes, I'm there with you.

Rehearsed? I don't think so. But Callum definitely has a natural...something. And those snug tan pants don't hurt, either....

There's a word for it. It probably is something like ''mnrghf".

Nope.
