Questions for tecchie-types:

Try as I may, I can't make a screencap with VLC. I've looked at tutorials and done everything I've been told to, changed the location to the desktop, and also I've changed the picture to jpg instead of png (it didn't work with png, either).
Supposedly something should appear in the upper corner (right? left?) and then I take it from there and do something else. How do I make this work?

Also, will it work with a DVD as well as with a file already on my computer? I'm trying to make it work with a DVD now, but I've tried and failed to make screencaps from saved files as well. Help?

I was trying to cap stuff the other day and someone told me to go to Preferences in VLC and uncheck the 'Overlay Video Output' box, then alt+print screen and paste as usual. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, though.

Okay, WHERE is the Overlay Video Output box I'm supposed to uncheck?

It's under settings, then preferences, then video, then check "advanced options" in the lower right-hand corner. Then click "save".

Ok, I right-click and snapshot. But then I go to the snapshot directory I specified and there's nothing there!

You right-click the snapshot option, then a picture of the cap appears briefly in the upper left of the screen. If that doesn't happen, something isn't right.

It happens! It does! I see the picture in the upper left! But then I go to the folder I have the caps directed to (My Documents\Fanstuff\vlc caps) and it is STILL EMPTY. Even when I refresh.

What names are given to the snapshots? Maybe I can search my computer and see if they're going somewhere else.

Oh, and don't click "save" until after you've unchecked "video overlay".

I unchecked it and saved! I rechecked it and saved! Still no joy!

It has to be unchecked. And do you have your desktop set as where to send it? I mean, you can send it anywhere, but that way it's at hand, and you know right away if it showed up.

What is the filename format? That way I can search.

I have it set to go to a folder, which I have open, and I don't see anything in it even after refreshing.

vlcsnap and then a number. I think that's what you wanted to know. I have it set as a jpg rather than a png, but I think that the filename stays the same.

I think I have it figured out!

No matter where I tell it to save, or what I tell it to save as, it will save as a png in My Documents\My Pictures. Yay?

At least I can make screencaps now! Thank you for all of your help.

Aha! I searched for photos modified today, and I see ONE picture in the My Pictures folder - which isn't where I told it to go. But! It's there!

I've heard that's a problem. It just goes to my pictures. I send them to the desktop and there's no problem. *g*
