Clearly the bullet list is my drug of choice these days:

  • Where is Stan Rogers when we need him?

He wouldn't have been at all surprised, I'm sure. :(

  • I really want to make a list for [livejournal.com profile] mission101, but I don't know if I can come up with 101 things I want to do in 1001 days. I want to make them meaningful, you know? I don't want to list something like "start list" and "finish list" and "go to the bathroom".

  • My mother's blood pressure is in the 90/50 range. She also has chronic anemia. She's been dizzy and weak. She's on several BP meds and Lasix. When she told me what her BP was (and it's been somewhat below 90/50) I practically ordered her to not take the Lasix or the BP meds until she saw the doctor. The doctor cut her Lasix in half, and also halved her lisinopril. IMO she needs to not take ANY Lasix. No edema, no symptoms of CHF. She's post-op but doing well considering. Also, one of the side affects of Lasix is ANEMIA. *headdesk* The doc said she may have to go over to Westerly Hospital for blood if her labs come back anemic. Yeah, I'd go with that, but um. I think the fecking meds are causing an exacerbation of the anemia. Of course, I'm not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV. If I did, I'd have a newer car.

    Dear AMA,

Giving meds isn't always the answer. People aren't robots, they don't always respond the same way.

    No love at all,

Me, on behalf of my maternal unit.

  • [livejournal.com profile] songdogmi (not to be confused with [livejournal.com profile] songdog, although both are Very Nice People) links to this:

Killing wolves is still illegal in Michigan

Why was it ever legal? Wolves are LESS AGGRESSIVE than dogs. Do we want to open up dog hunting? I don't live in Michigan, but it seems to me that unless an animal is directly attacking humans/livestock/pets, we should leave it well alone. And anyway, since wolves and dogs are almost identical genetically, how is a hunter going to tell he/she's not going after someone's Malamute? I don't remember any news article about pocket DNA tests being invented for use by hunters. wtf?

    Also? Cutest. Thing. Ever:

(from this site, which says "wolves need friends, not owners.") See? Fraser was right. *g*

  • Fannish projects are humming along, despite RL issues. Yes, even [livejournal.com profile] axial_tilt. I've also started writing what will likely be my longest fic ever (no, not the Barrett's Privateers one, although that's in the works and I'm gathering info, 'cause that one's hard). I really like the tiny scene I've written; it's one that's been in my head for weeks, and it turned out pretty good on (virtual) paper.

  • Night shift tomorrow. I'll make the obligatory "entertain me" post, I'm sure. No youTube, though, because Butler Hospital is Big Brother about youTube. :/

  • I'm going to have my Tarot cards read with [livejournal.com profile] tapped_trish, et. al. on Thursday. I haven't done that in ages. I can read my own, ostensibly, but I haven't in ages.

  • My house is clean save for my room. I'll clean some tomorrow when I'm not writing (see list item re: [livejournal.com profile] axial_tilt). But my kitchen! My dining room! My living room and bathroom! Yay!

  • Little Mosque holds its own opposite American Idol.

I cannot tell you how pleased I am about this. LM is cute (not great, but cute and very watchable). AI is teh evil, and shouldn't be shown to kids under, liek, fifty. I loathe it from the depths of everything I have depths of. Bleh. Ick. Ptui. Yay, cute little sitcom!

  • Here, have some Stan Rogers:

    Free in the Harbour

  • ETA: How could I forget to add this? Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] mickeyvt, and [livejournal.com profile] kupukello! Many happy returns, dears.

There is a wolves pack in Germany again. They came from Poland (borders obviously don't mean anything to them - illegal immigrants) and people are afraid. There is going to be blood test to confirm that these animals actually are wolves and not just wild dogs ::rolls eyes::. Hopefully our pack won't be killed like our bear last year ...

Just out of curiosity: is your mother using any iron tablets to help with the anaemia? I have had chronic anaemia myself (due to a hereditary disease that causes daily nosebleeds) and have had trouble with iron tablets because they didn't work. I solved it by no longer using the nose spray that my doc prescribed (because that actually gave me more nosebleeds) and taking extra vitamin C for the duration of the treatment. The proof is in the pudding as they say and my blood tests have been good ever since I started taking the extra vitamin C :)

Sometimes it's good to be critical. Just because you are not a doctor doesn't mean that you cannot do your homework, does it? Patients who suffer from chronic diseases are usually pretty aware of what does or doesn't work for their bodies (as you say, we are not machines and each react differently to a treatment). Is it possible for you to get a second opinion or change doctors?

My best wishes to you and your mother! I hope her health improves soon.

Take care,
Nine

She takes ferrous sulfate, twice a day IIRC. I've always been told that ferrous fumarate is metabolized by the body much better, so if/when I talk to her doc I'm going to ask about that.

My mother has a cardiologist who is great. Her surgeon put her on the Lasix because of post-op edema. She has no swelling now, so I'd think her regular doc would switch her to hydrochlorothiazide, which isn't as strong. Her two general docs are the only ones available, because she lives on an island only accessible by plane or boat. They're not bad docs, as far as I can tell, but they're docs, and docs like to fix things with medicine.

AWWWWWWWWW, wolfpic! Too adorable for words!!

IMO she needs to not take ANY Lasix. No edema, no symptoms of CHF. She's post-op but doing well considering.

To be devil's advocate here (and a paeds cardiology/cv surgery nurse), if things are looking good, its because the meds are doing what they are supposed to do (icky side effects notwithstanding). I've seen horrible things happen when diuretics are cut too soon, or parents' take it upon themselves to do so at home without talking to their docs :/

But I will say that I didn't know anaemia was a side effect; the biggest side effect we monitor for is electrolyte imbalance. Sometimes we give another diuretic along with lasix, called aldactone, to help keep potassium and sodium balances where they need to be.

I am glad your mom is doing well! ::hugs::

Oh, I'd never suggest she stop her meds on her own. I wanted her to not take her Lasix and lisinopril until she saw the doc the following morning (who cut them both in half). If she still needs a diuretic, why not HCTZ, which isn't as tough on the kidneys and is potassium-sparing? I don't work with cardiac patients every day, so I don't know the meds as well as you do, so maybe I'm way off in left field.

My mom's back in hospital (temporarily,I hope), with very low BP (they didn't tell me what it is, I'm calling now and will likely go down there. Hospital is an hour away, so I'll call first). The whole med stuff will probably be straightened out by her cardiologist, who works out of that hospital.

Doctors. Pah.

I have real hope for wolves in my Michigan, but there are a ton of hunters here (including my father) who scream and yell when anyone even hints at infringing on their right to Kill Animals. (A proposition was resoundingly defeated last November to ban the hunting of doves. Yay!) If the wolves start attacking livestock in large numbers, I fear for what might happen.

I'm sorry about all the trials with your Mum's health. How is she feeling? And how are you feeling?

Can't wait to hear about your reading. You will share, yes?

Oh. And that picture? You really should put a warning right at the top of the post when you include pictures that have near leathal levels of cuteness. I nearly "awww'd" myself to death.

Why are they attacking livestock? Is their usual prey scarce or their habitat being infringed on? AFAIK, wolves just don't stray into human areas for no reason.

See above comments for info re: mom. Me? I'm tired. Night shift tonight, yay!

The picture is an icon in waiting, yessir.

IF they start. To the best of my knowledge, they aren't. And haven't.
