Ontario politician wants Toronto to become a province.

"The 'straw that broke the camel's back' is the current spread of 'coyotes' in his parts of the province, he said, a matter locals would like to settle by placing a bounty on them.

'They'll never let you do that in Toronto,' he said, suggesting the only way enough attention could come to the plight of rural Ontarians would be 'to get rid of Toronto. Let them form their own province.'"

Wait, what?

Uh... huh.

They got crazy catching up in the Bruce? I'm going to have to watch what I drink up there, this summer...

When I first read the headline I thought Toronto wanted to secede from the province. But nooo, this guy wants to kick Toronto OUT. wtf?

Oh, and speaking of the Bruce, I'm thinking of taking one week of my (hopefully) two-week vacation and going somewhere other than Ottawa (shocking, I know, but dude. I didn't go there at all last year). I need suggestions!

What kinds of places do you like? Cities, small towns, hiking in the boonies? How far do you want to go? Need it be Ontario?

Well, it should be someplace I can drive to in a day. Since I'll be in Ottawa, I was thinking either Québec or Ontario. I'd really like to see some pretty, so some rural/park-y stuff would be nice. Also would like to see a little history, so wondering if Québec City is driveable, and whether the fact that all the French I know seems to revolve around food (seriously, I got a little freaked out in Gatineau, fergodsake, where I was a relative stone's throw from signs in English. I did manage to ride the STO without any trouble, so that's a plus--apparently I can read maps!).

I was going to suggest Quebec City, since it is the bomb. It's about a 5 hour drive from Ottawa, but if you're going to spend a week that's totally worth it. It is Very French, though. The touristy areas will know some English, but it really is very useful to have at least an understanding of written French. I don't know how much the language thing would throw you, and if you're on your own... perhaps a tour? I wouldn't let the language thing stop you.

Vieux-Quebec is truly rad. If not this year, definitely go SOME day.

If you're not quite ready to brave the deeper parts of La Belle Province, I would recommend hitting Algonquin (nearby), or if you're ambitious, Manitoulin Island (seven hours and some away, but, hey, scenic route!) It's kind of cottage-country, so quiet, but really, really pretty and in summer there's bound to be something going on. Check into a B&B and chillax kind of place. Some good trails and stuff. The bridge to Little Current is scary, but the view on the the drive is totally worth it.

You could always look up some festivals and stuff. Get a Tourism Ontario Guide. There might be some seasonal thing that's cool I don't even know about. :D?

SO MUCH TO CHOOSE FROM. Maybe I should stay all summer.

Manitoulin Island is already on my "definitely going eventually" list, and so is Québec City, although I'd be more likely to go there if I could drag a French speaker with me (and seriously, having to drag someone to all that history and culture, wtf?).

Tourism Ontario guide, great idea! I'll email right away. Whee! I'm more and more thinking five days in Ottawa and the rest tooling around. Hopefully I can actually afford this. *crosses fingers*

I think you should go to Quebec. It's got more history than you could shake a stick at or want to. Email for a Quebec Guide, too, and see what walking tours there are and stuff. I highly recommend being guided through the old city, because then you get to look at stuff like a cannon ball engulfed by a tree and know which things are haunted and learn how many times Notre Dame des Victoires was blown up. :D Fun facts!

Even if the French thing is hard, you will still have a blast. Or tool around Ontario and look at stuff! My friend has a book called "100 Unusual Things To See In Ontario"... you could get that and road trip it. :D

I ordered the Ontario guides and will order Québec ones. I stuck the book on my wishlist and will order it also. Whee!

And yeah, if everything else were equal I'd definitely pick Québec. I'm still a little freaked out about the language thing (I'm going back to school in the fall and will be taking French as my required language, lot of good that'll do me in the summer), but hmm. We shall see!

Money is also an object. I usually stay in hostels--it's a great, cheap way to travel if you research them really well. Even if I end up picking a place to go after I get to Ottawa, I'll still be good. My best holiday was in 2007, and basically I pointed the car and drove. This time I'm renting a car, so hopefully I'll get one with unlimited mileage.
