To all my Canadian friends:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!!

Today I'm counting my blessings in celebration with you instead of observing the Holiday That Must Not Be Named (you know, the C-word. Eesh).

Besides, your Thanksgiving date makes more sense than ours. The harvest has been loong gone by the fourth Thursday in November(not that I won't be scarfing down Mother's mashed potatoes when the time comes).

What cheer, Canada!

Mmmmm that's a good idea, to celebrate a worthwhile holiday, instead of the one we're having.

And I did not know that Canada had Thanksgiving earlier than you guys. There you go! I learned something new today. :D

Columbus Day. A person more undeserving of a holiday I am hard-pressed to find.

Here's a bit of <a href="http://www.thepeoplespaths.net/history/columbus.html"</a> history</a>.

I tend to rant on this, because I'm outraged that my country celebrates the life of such a man.

Oh... *light dawns* Well, he gave Britain potatoes and tobacco right? So at least that's something. Sort of. OK, not. :(

I think Sir Walter Raleigh gave Britain tobacco, but I'm not quite sure. I know John Lennon sings about it on the White Album. *g*

Columbus gave the Natives Smallpox. Bleh. The first WMD.

Oh, yes. Isn't he the one who said that the slaves should all be shipped back to Africa?

Done.

Not all slaves in America were African. Check it out. Granted, at the time of Lincoln, they were, but not in the beginning. The first slave trade in the British Colonies here were of Irish and British peasants, and were treated as more expendable than African slaves.

Calling all Caucasian slaves "indentured servants" is revisionist history as well.

If your family can trace its roots in the US back before 1760, there's a good chance that you have ancestors that were brought here as slaves.

Yep.

According to A Peoples' History, white servants were treated as bad as black ones, early on. Then the People in Charge decided that it would be a Very Bad Thing if the white and black servants/slaves got together and realised they outnumbered their masters. So, the white servants were treated better, were made higher status-wise, and were tought to think of black slaves as inferior. A bad thing for American history, a good thing for the White Guys running things.

Read the Redneck Manifesto.

Perhaps miscegenation had a factor in there too.

African slaves cost more. White slaves were actually treated worse as a result. Less overhead.

My point is, racism continues to be construct of The White Guys in charge so that they may continue their economic slavery of all working class people.

But that's a whole 'nother story, isn't it?

No problem. *g* Of course, you know I'm extremely jealous of you for living over there in God's country.

Now go eat. No diets on Thanksgiving.

I had an amazing turkey dinner! Yeah this is God's country. I honestly am glad to live in Canada. There's an awesome feeling when I think about it. :)

Yes, there is. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0684838648/104-9276931-7693556?v=glance)

There's also a band named The Redneck Manifesto but I don't know anything about them.

Fat people and poor white folks (which are usually the same people) are the only societal subset that it's OK to ridicule these days. Jim Goad is an interesting character, for sure, but this is an interesting book.

In the US, Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November. It's not a bad time to have it, I guess, 'cause it kicks off the Christmas shopping holiday season.

Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the first Monday in October (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong, Canadians!) I think this is a more appropriate date because Thanksgiving is a celebration of the fruits of the Harvest, and the Harvest is long over by the end of November.
