This should make me angry. It does, but mostly it just makes me very sad.

Such a tragedy, and it seems there's no way to stop it.

It's incredibly sad, and it happens in so many countries, especially in Asia where a lot of cultures do have strong son-preference. I don't know if you want to read more about it, but I've been impressed with the way Elisabeth Croll writes- it's all based on solid research, too, which is more than you can say for a lot of anthro/sociologists looking at the missing girls.

What does she write? I'd like to read more.

I know that Chinese families have a similar situation. One of my college professors adopted a baby from China. She says ALL the babies in the orphanages are girls. There's a lot of sex-selection abortions, a lot of it because of their one-child policy and that it's the boy who takes care of the parents in their old age, and the girl who lives in her husband's family's house and takes care of her in-laws. At least that's what my professor told me.

That's horrible. I suppose I have to consider myself lucky for not having been born in India.

It's catching up with them. In China, there are many more males than there are females; so just *who* are the males going to marry? These people are denying themselves and their sons the chance to have a family.

According to the NPR segment I heard, some in India believe that the practise is going to catch up with people in the long run. The reason some Indian couples are doing the sex selection is that they can't afford a dowry for a daughter. But, if eventually women are scarce, it's the men who'll have to have the dowrys and impress the parents of the women. In other words, Karma.
