I woke up at quarter to ten this morning (that's 9:45 for those of you who weren't around back when clocks had hands), which isn't usually a bad time to wake up except for the fact that I had to be at church at ten. I toyed with just not going, but figured if I did that I might decide not to go next week and so on and end up back where I started with the staying home on Sundays. Besides, I'm in the choir. So, um, yeah. I threw on the clothes I wore to work yesterday and ended up not even being late (although I missed choir warm-up).

I love UU services a lot, especially the music. One of the songs they do regularly is called "Spirit of Life", which has a really pretty tune, and simple, amazing lyrics that go like this:

Spirit of Life, come unto me.
Sing in my heart all the stirrings of compassion.
Blow in the wind, rise in the sea;
Move in the hand, giving life the shape of justice.
Roots hold me close; wings set me free;
Spirit of Life, come to me, come to me.

We sang that today, which makes me even more happy I went, because it's one of those songs that stays with you, and it's a pretty good concept to have running around the brain all day. It fits all religions, which is always a good thing. If I can find a copy of the music, I'll upload it; it's really gorgeous.

Since this is the second week I've posted something church-related, it may become a trend. Not that this is a bad thing, mind you. :)

This was the poem used for the Opening Words at church today. I really love it, especially the wonderful way the minister recited it as an intro to the Water Communion (which next year I will definitely have water for, oh, yes I will).

My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand.

Are my boots old? Is my coat torn?
Am I no longer young, and still not half-perfect? Let me
keep my mind on what matters,
which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be
astonished.
The phoebe, the delphinium.
The sheep in the pasture, and the pasture.
Which is mostly rejoicing, since all the ingredients are here,

which is gratitude, to be given a mind and a heart
and these body-clothes,
a mouth with which to give shouts of joy
to the moth and the wren, to the sleepy dug-up clam,
telling them all, over and over, how it is
that we live forever.

"learning to be astonished" is now officially a tag, and a LJ interest. :D :D

I'm not sure whether to be amused or disgusted with this. I'll pick amused, because it's better for my blood pressure.

Oh, noes!

For those interested, here are the actual

principles and purposes of Unitarian Universalists )

The article also mentione the United Religions Initiative and the Earth Charter without explaining what either of them are.

They DO link to the UUA's website, which is here.

Hmmp. On second thought, I'm not really amused. More like annoyed. :/

Oh, and my icon is the UU flaming chalice, which has a pretty cool history.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] unitarians for the link to the article.

(note: if you are a conservative Christian, I'm not flaming your religion or your right to it. I'm flaming this article's lack of treating mine in the same manner and telling me that I'm a cultist and a liar for following UU principles.)
