Because he called the forest brother,
Because he called the Earth his mother
they drove him out into the rain;
some people even said
that the boy from the country was insane.

Because he spoke to fish in the creek
He tried to tell us that the animals could speak
and who knows? Perhaps they do.
How do you know they don't,
just because they've never spoken to you?

Boy from the country, left his home when he was young
Boy from the country, he loves the sun

He tried to tell us that we should love the land,
but we just turned our heads and laughed
You see, we did not understand

Sometimes I think that the boy from the country
is the only one who sees,
'cause the boy from the country
doesn't want to see the forest for the trees.

Boy from the country, he left his home when he was young
Boy from the country, he loves the sun

If anyone can get me, or tell me where to get, the mp3 of the live version of this, you'll have all my thanks and gushing gratitude.

That's the live version from An Evening With John Denver. It's on the LP version. The idiots at the record company left the song off the CD version. Grr. [livejournal.com profile] songdog sent me the studio version, but the live one is so much better. No annoying studio musicians and backing vocalists. Just voice and guitar. lovely. It's really one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

ETA: I got it from iTunes! A thousand thank-yous to [livejournal.com profile] i_harobed! Does anyone know how to turn an iTunes song into an mp3 so I can listen to it on Winamp?

Got it! Yay! Thank you so much! This is a song I first heard when I was a teenager. *sigh* I'm glad to get it back again. *hugs*

The only way to make it an mp3 is burn it to an audio CD and then rip it as an mp3. Such is the nature of iTunes--they're trying to make it NOT easy to get it into mp3 so you can pass it around to your friends. ;)

I love John Denver. Grew up with his music and when he died, it took a long time for me to be able to listen to his stuff without crying.

I too am really annoyed that they totally screwed the Evening With John Denver Album when they ported it to CD. Grrr. It *was* a two album set.

Yeah. Why didn't they make it into a two-CD set and add extras? I can't believe that there's not other live John Denver stuff.

John Denver was a big part of my teenage years. I miss him still. Unnecessary, stupid death.

The Wildlife Concert is a 2 CD disc set. And it's fabulous. :-)

I've seen him live twice. Once just before I moved to Columbus. Saw that concert in St Louis with my mother. It was kind of special becuase mom and I both loved John Denver for a long time.

The second time was a Christmas concert the December before he died. That was my Christmas present that year from my hubby. :-)

My favorite song of his is Calypso.. and that song, sung live is incredible! Actually, you know.. when I was a wee babe.. my very first ever mailed out fan letter went to John Denver. :-)

His song Calypso is near and dear to me because I'm also a fan of Jacques Cousteau, and Marine Biology is the career I would have had, if I could add 1+1 LOL. But needless to say, Calypso is about one of my favorite scientists sung by my favorite singer. :-)

No way possible. My dad and I took a look at the encryption when we were geeking around when we first got it. It's practically impossible to break the code, and even if you do make a CD out of it and then try to rip it, I'm sure they won't let you, or it'll still be in the same format or something. They are very VERY tetchy about it. Obviously. For recording companies to buy into it they had to make it completely secure and fool-proof, and believe me it is. And, well, obviously it's not going to play on WinAmp - the idea is to get people using iTunes. Which is, I have to say, much nicer anyway. :D

If it can be burned to a cd, and then extracted, there is a program called MKWact (available free) that changes formats and compressions. If it burns to a cd in .wav format (which when burning from .mp3s, is still lossy, of course), the way it usually happens when I do it burning audio format rather than data format (which I think is the way to burn .mp3s which will play on .mp3 players, and have many more songs per disk than on audio), then if it at all "normal" it should extract as a .wav. You can then drag and drop to compress it to an .mp3 or .shn (Shorten -- which is a lossless compression used when there are no .mp3 generations) file. Ask your family guru. Mine will be home this weekend, and hopefully I'll be up & ready for experimentation by nightfall Sunday. Let me know if you make any further progress. I want that song, too! I still have the LP... I did get the live version of "Today".

Hmm, well. You could get iTunes and spend 99 cents to get it. Getting iTunes is v. easy.

The only way to turn it into an MP3 for WinAmp is to burn it to a CD as an audio CD (not just dragging and dropping the song onto a blank CD), and reimport it as an MP3.
