Because he called the forest brother,
Because he called the Earth his mother
they drove him out into the rain;
some people even said
that the boy from the country was insane.

Because he spoke to fish in the creek
He tried to tell us that the animals could speak
and who knows? Perhaps they do.
How do you know they don't,
just because they've never spoken to you?

Boy from the country, left his home when he was young
Boy from the country, he loves the sun

He tried to tell us that we should love the land,
but we just turned our heads and laughed
You see, we did not understand

Sometimes I think that the boy from the country
is the only one who sees,
'cause the boy from the country
doesn't want to see the forest for the trees.

Boy from the country, he left his home when he was young
Boy from the country, he loves the sun

If anyone can get me, or tell me where to get, the mp3 of the live version of this, you'll have all my thanks and gushing gratitude.

That's the live version from An Evening With John Denver. It's on the LP version. The idiots at the record company left the song off the CD version. Grr. [livejournal.com profile] songdog sent me the studio version, but the live one is so much better. No annoying studio musicians and backing vocalists. Just voice and guitar. lovely. It's really one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

ETA: I got it from iTunes! A thousand thank-yous to [livejournal.com profile] i_harobed! Does anyone know how to turn an iTunes song into an mp3 so I can listen to it on Winamp?

If it can be burned to a cd, and then extracted, there is a program called MKWact (available free) that changes formats and compressions. If it burns to a cd in .wav format (which when burning from .mp3s, is still lossy, of course), the way it usually happens when I do it burning audio format rather than data format (which I think is the way to burn .mp3s which will play on .mp3 players, and have many more songs per disk than on audio), then if it at all "normal" it should extract as a .wav. You can then drag and drop to compress it to an .mp3 or .shn (Shorten -- which is a lossless compression used when there are no .mp3 generations) file. Ask your family guru. Mine will be home this weekend, and hopefully I'll be up & ready for experimentation by nightfall Sunday. Let me know if you make any further progress. I want that song, too! I still have the LP... I did get the live version of "Today".

Hmm, well. You could get iTunes and spend 99 cents to get it. Getting iTunes is v. easy.
