Last night my friend Linda and I saw the movie Closer.

Suffice it to say that it's a fairly accurate portrayal of how people can f**k each other over. But. It's Depressing (capital D) to the nth degree. Nobody starts out happy, nobody's happy in the middle, nobody finishes happy. I'm not someone who has to have a happy ending, but it'd be nice if someone, anyone, were happy at some moment in the film. Not the case here in the slightest. :/.

However, geh. The song that bookends the movie, played at the very start and very end, is so very lovely and angsty that it makes sitting through this film-in-need-of Prozac worth it.

It's Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter. Listen and adore. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in twenty years. The movie's depressing. The song...transports. Go listen, and tell me what you think. :D

And so it is just like you said it would be
Life goes easy on me
most of the time
And so it is the shorter story
No love, no glory
No hero in her sky

I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes...

And so it is just like you said it should be
We'll both forget the breeze
Most of the time
And so it is the colder water
The Blower's Daughter
The pupil in denial

I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off of you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes off you
I can't take my eyes...

Did I say that I loathe you?
Did I say that I want to
Leave it all behind?

I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off of you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind off you
I can't take my mind...
my mind...my mind...
'Til I find somebody new

Not my thing. Not run-from-the-room horrible, but not my thing. (Why *did* I always run from the room when a song came on that I didn't like? Why didn't I just change the radio station?)

Did you hear about David Brudnoy? How sad.

Perhaps you can tell me the meaning of "GIP"?

Plus, I'm kind of tired of my icon, but too lazy to change it. I've seen people superimposing Santa hats on everything. I want one of those blinking icons, which change pictures, and I want to know how to write a message across a picture. I have a protest icon in mind...[profile] kissed_a_drunk can show me how to do it, I think.

I've asked people at restaurants to change stations because I didn't like what they were playing. Also a dentists' office, once. While I was in the chair. Ahem.

This song reminds me of the old WEEI-FM, which would have played it.

Oh, and GIP means Gratuitous Icon Post. I don't know how to make an animated icon, either, but [livejournal.com profile] patchfire does. If you ask her nicely she might make you one. *G*

I have been looking everywhere for this song! Thank you so much! And I do want to see the movie, but I'm afraid of going alone because I'll be depressed.

I was depressed, for about ten minutes. Really, I didn't like the characters enough to care. It was well-acted (Natalie Portman was fantastic), but eh. I didn't like any of them. It was a well-done film without a point, IMO.

Damien Rice's O in general is just the most gorgeous album ever. My friend Jenn turned me on to it and it was my birthday list comprised entirely of unfindable CDs that gave me the album. It is gorgeous he maybe makes me cry all the time.
