Apparently Starbucks employees in Maryland are asking breastfeeding women to cover up or go in the restroom. And the women are fighting back!!

Here's [livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01's take on things: What she said.

I hate Starbucks so much.

Oh, and wtf? Why are my hands all dried out even when I've been using gloves to clean all day? Hmph.

I'm sick and fucking tired of people being 'grossed out' by breastfeeding and asking moms to feed their babies in a BATHROOM where they wouldn't sit and eat themselves. Hell, I bet these people wouldn't feed their PETS in a bathroom.

You may remember this story, but I was out at the mall once with my parents when Claire was about a month old - I hadn't come back from maternity leave yet - and I was sitting on a bench nursing her. I had a nursing top on - the kind that has the overlay with the slits underneath - and she was being very still/quiet/calm. No skin was showing that I was aware of, and if it was, it couldn't have been but an inch of non-nipple skin and you would have had to be looking really closely. This guy walked by and made gagging sounds and said I ought to go in the bathroom to feed my kid or 'give her a bottle like God intended'. =; My dad went OFF on the man. (I love my daddy.)

I'm glad I nursed her, because I'm positive that's the reason that even though I work in a very germy environment (school) and she goes to a daycare, she gets a cold maybe... once a year, and it's very minor. She gets sick less than I do!

'give her a bottle like God intended'.

Which is of course why bottles grow on trees and formula falls from the sky like rain. Hallefuckinglujah.

I'm not going to condemn formula feeing moms; after I was in the hospital with gallstones/depression/gallstone complications/panic attacks, I gave up breastfeeding after four months because I was on too dang many drugs and just too sick. I'm all for doing what works best for each individual mom and baby - while it might not be THE healthiest thing, you have to do what you have to do. But it pisses me off to no end when moms are asked to leave/whatever. As long as they aren't deliberately exposing a whole lot of skin or walking around shirtless or something, then buzz off!

Formula has its place, although I'd like to see it in fewer places because moms are constantly told they "can't nurse", when yes, they can. If it's a choice to use formula, then fine. The choice needs to be the moms, though, and not the doc's. Or the formula companies, who at least used to give free samples away in hospitals.

Anyway, no matter what people think of formula, I don't think anyone (except maybe that rocket scientist who yelled at you) would call formula and Act of God. It's almost funny, that.

I do totally agree that breastfeeding babies is the way forward health-wise...

It's interesting that the American Academy of Pediatrics has only (relatively) recently announced this amazing fact when us hippiechicmamas have known it forevah.

Geh. Don't get me started on doctors.

Heh - don't get me started on them, either! Hopeless bunch of idiots, half of them...

The problem is that as a species we've become so obsessed with progress we're trying to fix things that ain't broke...

Take it back to the old school, I say. A child who is never exposed to normal household germs isn't going to develop an immune system and that really rather defeats the object.

Absolutely. We used to have chicken-pox parties when my kids were little. And, um, playing in the mud is FUN!

I just want to raise on little point about the eating in bathrooms thing, in that, it's a little different.

Taking a plate of food into a public toilet - especially one of the sort when you move directly into the cublicle - does have many differences to simply attaching baby to breast...

It's not the same to the mum, but to the baby it is. S/he has to eat with all those noxious fumes and all. Can't be very pleasant for the baby. I mean, I'm not a baby (and I was a bottle baby at that), but. Eww.

I don't know about over there, but the larger, multi-cubicled Ladies rooms in the UK aren't normally that bad at all.

The only thing you have to worry about is the decor...

I'm heading off to bed, now, though - not just running away! - I have work tomorrow... Bleh.
