Day 10: A song that reminds you of your father.

Well, since I was fortunate enough to have two, I get to post two songs.

My dad and I were both John Denver fans, and we especially liked this one. Somewhere I have a picture of twelve-year-old me standing next to a Toledo scale.

This was my stepdad's favourite song in the world, and for good reason, because it's gorgeous. It was sung at his memorial service, and I always think of him when I hear it. This is Nat Cole's version of Hoagy Carmichael's classic:

Day 9: A song that reminds you of an ex.

Totally angst-free memory: my ex-husband used to sing this song all the time. Not the whole song, mind you; he'd randomly burst into a room in Krameristic fashion and blurt out either "it's just a game that you play" or "buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight." I found it hilarious, but I guess you had to be there.

The song itself is a lovely one. Ah, the days of the singer-songwriter. If only they'd happen again.

Day 8: One band/singer whose popularity you will never understand.

Anne Murray. She has a pleasant enough voice, but no real personality and her songs are boring. Do not get.

This one's really pretty, though. Even if the Loggins and Messina version is light-years better.

Day 7: One band/singer you're ashamed to admit you like.

I'm really not ashamed at all to admit that I like Barry Manilow, but apparently there are some people who think I should be. I don't get it--this guy is really, really talented. I was a hardcore fan in high school, and I still love his stuff. This one is my favourite:

Two entries today, because I missed yesterday on account of RL.

Day 5: Your favourite female singer.

This one was hard. "But I have so many favourite female singers," said I. "There's Sinéad, there's Melissa, there's k.d., how could I choose just one?" But I'm trying to be a good meme-taker and not be all "this meme ain't the boss o' me". I could have gone with the nostalgic angle, or the voice angle, or the lyric angle, but I figured those were too limiting. So I picked the singer I could listen to no matter what mood I'm in, of whose body of work I know and love the most (and who really fits well into all those other categories in any case).

So, anyway, I picked Cheryl, because in the end, how could I not? This is the song that introduced me to her, and it was love at first listen:

Day 6: Your favourite band. I thought this would be hard, but it ended up a complete no-brainer:

I continue to insist that the Beatles were not only the first emo band but the prototype for every emo band to follow. I should really do a poll, because plenty of people don't agree with me.

Day 4: Your favourite male singer.

I've already posted something by my favourite male singer; for the sake of variety I will post something by (one of) my favourite male singer(s) who is not Elton John:

I love my fake!fiancé (and this song) so very much. :)

Day 3: A song that makes you dance:

I also love the video. I double-dare anyone to try NOT to dance to this.

Day 2: A song that makes you cry:

I have actually been reduced to sobbing with past listens, which is why I try to avoid hearing it in public as much as possible. Also, the song came out when [livejournal.com profile] mr_t00by was fifteen, which adds to the oversentimentalization factor. I do love it, despite the inconvenience.

I'm finally doing one of those 30-day memes that keep going around. This one's the music meme.

Day 1: Your favourite song:

Since my favourite song is actually an entire album (I even wrote a review for it a while back), I'll pick something from that:

Here are the rest of the songs.

Oh, and if you buy this album? See if you can get the version without the added three songs at the end. They're great songs, but this is a CONCEPT ALBUM, and they're just not part of the concept.
