Spent the day at the spread-out campus of Boston University with my Hannah (well, and her father, who basically slept through all the infosessions).
Got a little lost on the way out of Boston. Passed within spitting distance of the Chapel (*squee*). Yes, that was me chanting OMGlooklooklook and my daughter rolling her eyes. :) Needless to say I would love it if Hannah went to BU, and it's mostly because of the curriculum and general feel of the University, and only partly because she'd be in the middle of Boston and I could take the T and not drive to visit her and OMG you can see the Citgo sign from the campus. Honestly, I'd brave the cold winters and live in Boston in an eyeblink if I could afford it (yeah, I know,
patchfire, I'll change my tune come November). But it really is my favourite city in the world (that I've seen, anyway). Every time I go, from the time I was a kid, I have this odd sense of homecoming, although I've never lived there. Sometimes I think it's my Sox fangirlishiness that makes me love Boston so much, but when I really examine it, I'm positive it's the other way around. *sigh* I'm such a yankee New Englander.
Got my acceptance letter from National Midwifery Institute. The woman who runs the school had called me a couple of days ago to say it was on its way (and said she enjoyed talking to me when I called her, woah).
Ate dinner at Duffy's so I could see the game (hey, it's cheaper than a ticket, d00ds), and watched my boys trounce the Devil Rays. Boring game, but as long as we won, I couldn't be happier.
So, why have I been up since oh, 3:30, and why can't I sleep? *sigh* Maybe it's the FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS I have to come up with for the first year of NMI? I mean, I can do a payment plan, but eep.
I should go back to bed as I have to work without a day off for the next five days. I'm used to my Mondays and Thursdays off, darnit.
Oh, and we might strike. Which means no job (well, getting a temporary job) and endless picketing. *idly wonders how much it pays to work concessions at Fenway*

Date: 2005-04-16 11:22 am (UTC)Anyway, off topic, but I *must* share: I HAVE U2 TICKETS!!!!! *dies* October 24th at the Palace in Auburn Hills! I paid an obscene amount for them on eBay (which actually ended up being just the face value of the tickets with a profit for the seller of $20 for shipping). They're even pretty good seats - upper level, but only 3 rows up, aisle, at about the "50 yeard line". I had to really take pause in spending so much on a concert, but they *are* U2 and Jim has never seen them live, poor soul. The queen of rationalization, I am, I am. :) OMG, the show isn't for months and I'm absolutely giddy! I watched thier DVD "U2 Go Home" last night (a concert taped at Slane Castle) and was virtually jumping up and down on the couch. I'm afraid I'll probably make a fool of my 39-year-old self, jumping around, dancing, and screaming, but when did I start caring?
Another reason for me to be excited (or maybe not): In a couple weeks, the movie version of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is released. This is my most beloved book (or series of books). I have been reading and rereading the series pretty much yearly ever since I was in high school. When I read them, the mental images I have of the story are so vivid and so dear to me that I'm almost afraid to see the movie for fear they'll be replaced by what's onscreen. I know you're quite fond of the Potter books and must have you're own mental images of them. How do you feel about seeing different ones onscreen?

I like the HP movies, for the most part. My problem isn't with the actors, it's that so much is left out that I think is important. I mean, really, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is 735 pages long and they're cramming it into ONE film.
As for Hitchiker's, I'm not sure it should be made into a film. There's too much imagery that maybe shouldn't be filmed because it would look, I dunno, off, somehow. I'll see it, but. *shrugs* Apparently the TV-movie wasn't so good for this very reason.
And, yay for U2 tickets! I'm jealous. I've never seen them live, either. I'm going to a Dave Matthews concert in July, though, whee! And most likely I'll be headed to Philadelphia for Elton John's free thing.

Date: 2005-04-16 11:48 am (UTC)One suspects that it might actually pay somewhat decently; the cost of getting to Fenway, however...
I'm horrible, I don't go anywhere. I'm like "Okay, if I'm going in that direction, let me go here, here, and here, too, to save gas." Bah.

Date: 2005-04-16 08:38 pm (UTC)First off, as a born and bred Bostonian, I'm sharing in the Boston love. I've traveled the world and lived in many places. But, Boston is one of my favorite cities. And, no matter where I was, I knew I'd end up back in Boston. There are certainly things about it that drive me crazy but ultimately I love living here. As for the Sox fangirling, that's gotta be a factor. I LOVE the Sox but the Patriots rock my world! /gushing about Boston and Boston Sports teams.
Second, BU is a fabulous school; i almost went there (and ironically enough, also almost went to Wheaton and Fordham). I ended up at Northeastern which in similar in scope (large, sprawling campus, lots of people in your year). It was interesting experience. I certainly learned a lot and was forced to grow and improve in ways I wasn't expecting. I wish nothing but the best for Hannah.
OMG - the National Midwifery Institute! I've been incredibly busy lately and could get to a couple of your posts about women's issues. Midwifery is just so fascinating to me. When I became a Montessori teacher for newborns to age 3, we had to do about a pre-natal studies. I ended up assisting in 8 births and seriously considered becoming a mid-wife. Ultimately, It wasn't for me but I am SO excited to hear that you;re starting the program. Yay for you and yay for the women that you are going to help! This news makes me absurdly happy.
Happy Saturday!

Date: 2005-04-17 06:00 am (UTC)I heartily support the Patriots and hope they win the Super Bowl every year. However, when it comes down to it, I'm not a sports fan. I'm a Sport fan. It's baseball, and only baseball, since 1967, d00d.
