The opening lines of the story read:

“The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive … The only person left outside was a teenage boy who was lying flat on his back in a flowerbed outside number four.”


Nope, it's not fanfic. And I get to read the rest at the Summer Solstice.

Yeah, I also noticed (along with everyone else!) that this sounds just like fanfic; I'm sure we could put together a really long list of fanstories that begin like this if we wanted to. I don't think that this is a bad thing; Tolkien said of "once upon a time" that we can think of that phrase as a bookend for a fairytale-type story. (I wish I knew where my copy of his essay was!) Anyway, fanfic authors who started their anticipation of OOTP had very specific canon reasons to, and now we know just how solid those reasons are. *g*
