I strongly believe in prenatal care (midwife instead of routine OB) because I believe that it offers more information when information can make a very big difference for the life or health of both mother and child. For example, if you know that a child has spina bifida you can treat it in utero by fetal surgery and have the baby recover in an environment where the risk of infection is very low and the baby can be born with the lesion already fixed. If surgery is not possible a c-section minimizes the risk that the exposed spinal cord will be damaged in such a way that it would cause paralysis for the child. I don't agree with testing for things that are easily seen by their symptoms (like gestational diabetes and preeclampsia) across the board, but being able to make an assessment of a fetus by ultrasound to verify their health or to see that there is a problem (like a heart condition or spina bifida or intenstines that form outside the body) allows peace of mind for the parents so that they feel like their trust in the natural pregnancy and birth process is as well founded as possible and it allows for resources to be allocated appropriately for families who have medical problems that will need to be treated.
