Dear Paul Gross,

Please stop.

You're allowed to be pretty and smart. I'll give you that.

You're also allowed to record music that's pleasant and catchy. Got a nice tune and I can dance to it, I give it a 75.
Nice but nothing out of the ordinary.

But please don't write or (gods forbid) record any more songs that are so gorgeous and intense and breathtaking that I can feel them all the way down to the tips of my fingers.

Because it really isn't fair, all that not being able to breathe and everything.

On second thought, forget I said anything.

No, really, forget it.

Carry on.

I'll be over here in a heap on the floor next to the speaker.

Until next time, so long and thanks for all the consonants,

Me

I mean, holy shit.

Keeley and Gross - Family Matters

I blame [livejournal.com profile] stormymouse for this, and I mean that in the nicest way. &hearts

YES, carry on ALREADY!!!

Oh, I love Paul's voice ... ::shivers::. He can sing to my all-day long ::grins::

Have you seen his music videos yet? He is a FUCKIN' rock-star!

I've heard a lot of Paul's stuff. But this? Takes my breath away. The music, the minor key, the lyrics, everything. Bloody brilliant. I don't fall in love with a song easily, either. I'm very picky.

And okay, yes, I like the consonants.

Oh yeah, he has a way with ... words.

"Give the Dog a Bone," one of Gross's tunes, exemplifies the singer-songwriter's wicked sense of humor, his sly twist of plot. It also takes full advantage of the husky growl in his voice. The first time I listened to this track, a picture flew unbidden into my mind of a gorgeous-yet-clueless guy, naked on a bed in a cheap motel room, trying to figure why his "date" just walked out the door. It still makes me giggle.

I haven't listened to that one yet (probably because I don't have it loaded on my iPod. I swear I live and breathe my iPod these days).

I usually like serious songs better than humourous ones. This one? Hits all my music/poetry/country-folk/story song buttons. Songs that paint a picture suck me in every time. And I love David's harmony. Their voices really compliment each other.

But he has such a wicked sense of humor - not that I'm certain what he's singing about most of the time ... ::grins::. Oh, and I got the Shakespeare reference - yes, I did ::nods seriously::

And I like that he can order me what to do:

Don't know if you're interested, but there's a Yahoo e-mail list for David Keeley info and general fannishness:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/KeeleysCherryBeach/?yguid=218117212

Every once in a while the mod will solicit questions and send them to David, and then post his replies.

He seems like a cool guy.

Yay! This is a good thing, because I'm pretty sure he actually performs regularly. He's a singer-actor rather than an actor-singer (*wishes for 1945 when Frank Sinatra proved there was no difference*), so concerts may be a possibility. In Canada, probably, but um. When have I ever been averse to going to Canada? *g*

Oh, yes. I love that song so much. And his diction!

I think you're the only person I know who goes as weak-kneed as I do over Paul's consonants... and this song showcases them like nothing else. Dear lord. *happysquirms*

Is there a video of this? I don't think so, but if there is, I want to see it, like yesterday.

Consonants are best visualised, after all.

Sadly, no vid for this one. Only Voodoo (*points to icon*), Papa's Front Porch (one of David's), 32 Down, Santa Drives a Pickup Truck (*eyeroll*), and Ride Forever. Ah, well.

I wouldn't mind guitar tabs, either. I'm kind of thinking that if there's no video, there's probably not much of a chance for guitar tabs, either. :/

So far I've only got chords for Ride Forever:

(In a doc file so as to maintain the font and proportional spacing.)

Whenever I get around to working up chords for some of the others, I'll be happy to share them with you. Do the same?

I've been playing guitar since I was eleven at the oldest. Took lessons for a very, very brief time. I can't do anything fancy with strumming; I wish I could. Mostly I accompany myself, and I haven't done it in a while. My dream is to take up the fiddle, actually. *g* I own a guitar, a fiddle, and a banjo. I'm a virtuoso on the guitar compared to the other two, which are like foreign languages. Someday, though, I'll play fiddle like Natalie Macmaster *points to icon*. In some dream.

I'd really like to figure out the chords to this, though. Minor chords, I know a few of those. It's in my range, too. I know I won't nail the Cs and Ks and Gs (with a guest appearance by D--NOW how much would you pay? [/infomercial]) like Paul does. *bites lip*

It really is flailing to this specific song. So it'd only be three minutes of anoxia. Paul's other stuff is (mostly) very nice, but like I said. I'm pretty picky about music.

Family Matters is my favourite PG song by far - it's haunting and gorgeous and sung brilliantly. So many of Paul's songs are basically him singing a story through 'characters' (the old sea-dog, the American tourist etc), but this is one song where it's just him without any acting and it's fantastic.

Saying that, I also get shivers down my spine at the opening few lines of Kiss You Till You Weep - he sounds like a rougher Bono talking about all the places he wants to have sex. I often listen to that song and switch over after that opening.

I can't find a flaw in it. I connect with songs rarely, and I'm a huge music geek. But yeah, this is gorgeous. Honestly breathtaking.

I like Kiss You Till You Weep, the whole thing, actually. I never got a Bono connection. Now, of course, I won't be able to dismiss the Bono visual. Thanks, buddy. *g*

A lot of Paul's stuff is like I said, pleasant, nice, sweet. Family Matters is serious music, from the songwriting up. I would love to find somewhere that has the guitar tabs to it.
