A few months ago, [livejournal.com profile] songdog played this song for me. It took me a bit to get who was singing it because I wasn't even thinking in that direction, but when I figured it out, I did my best impression of a human flycatcher. Because oh, my, if this isn't a little miracle:

Elton John - Bridge Over Troubled Water

It sounds like a demo, with strings that may or may not be Paul Buckmaster's. [livejournal.com profile] eltonroo, do you know where and when this was recorded? It sounds old, very old, which means it was recorded by baby!Elton.

Only symbolically. Metaphorically? Electronically? I also got Maury Chaykin and the lady with the frizzy hair who should have been Martha Burns instead.

I thought you would never ask.
Actually I have never heard an Elton recording of this song. I do have a cd which has Elton covering a number of hits from 1969 but Bridge Over Troubled Waters is not on it. I assume though that he may have recorded it around the same time. Fortunately he and Bernie started writing and recording their own stuff and that was the end of Elton's "cover" days!!

I have the covers CD, as well. It could be that this was one he made that didn't make the CD. It's a lovely recording, though. Has that demo feel to it that I love. Not to mention that Elton singing Paul Simon just can't be a bad thing. :)

I finally got to see Paul Simon in concert in 2002. Two childhood friends (they are brothers) took me and we had great seats up close to the stage. Paul and his band were outstanding.

I've seen him twice. He's an amazing talent. And such a poet.

And would you believe that Paul's "openning act" was Brian Wilson? He came out ten minutes before the concert was scheduled to start (the place was only half full) and proceeded to deliver an amazing set. It was better than having the Beach Boys themselves as Brian had a great young band who could really do the old Beach Boy harmonies. And to top it all off, during the encore the Barenaked Ladies (a great Canadian band) came out and backed Brian for a couple of Beach Boy classics. The crowd went nuts.
Boy I love concerts.

I heard about that. Did Brian join BNL for a rousing chorus of "Brian Wilson"?

As I recall, Brian's own band played a little of that song at the openning of the concert. Very cool.

Oh, it is a gem indeed! Thank you for sharing* :) It took my ears a little while to actually believe that this is Elton! But now they are truly convinced. Strange to hear this song in his voice. But fantastic at the same time :)

*You know, I'm getting to the point where I made a folder that says "primroseburrows" just to file all the lovely music that I find in your journal. I hope you don't mind. :)

Awww. :) The real reason I spam so much music is because I'm addicted to fileshare. Which, y'know, beats heroin.
