Human rights body reconsiders Inuit climate change petition

Dear USA:

If the end of the world were in YOUR back yard, you'd be writing petitions, too.

Emphatically,

Me

I really, really hope they decide to allow it. I wonder, though, why the hearing is going to be in Washington. Maybe it should be in Iqaluit, so everyone can see firsthand.

Where is Al Gore when we need him?

I do hope this goes somewhere - It won't - but I really hope it does. The First Nations are absolutely correct of course, although in a court case, it would be nigh on impossible to prove that the US was solely responsible for their enforced life-style changes. At the very least, it should raise awareness and yes, Al? Get your parka on.

I don't think that the US *is* solely responsible for it, either. China and other countries aren't exactly helping any, either, but the US is certainly liable. There's so much we could be doing, and we aren't.

I don't think a lot of us realize that um. There are Inuit who are US citizens, too. Someone maybe should ask them what they think about the whole thing, too.

I want a "What Would Al Do" icon. Eventually I'll make one.

Well the First Nations in the US are honorary Canadians, surely? LOL.

You are absolutely right of coursethat everyone is liable for this, which is why this thing won't stick legally. Boy, this is a sucky sucky world. I am just increasingly of the impression that there is no way out of this and I hate that. Wouldn't it be nice to have a parallel universe somewhere which is doing it right?

Technically the Inuit aren't considered part of the First Nations. Something about them coming after the land bridge was gone (which I can't figure out how this is possible. High-tech kayaks? *shrug*), but yeah honourary Canadians. :)

Everyone's liable, but I guess that those who are actively trying to do something about it are at least lesser culprits than the rest. After all, the whole idea of climate change isn't very old. When I was a kid it was all about pollution, which helped cause climate change. We didn't know that; all we knew is that it was bad for our lungs and caused diseases. This is so, so much worse.

Wouldn't it be nice to have a parallel universe somewhere which is doing it right?

A parallel universe, hmm. We'd have to pick our inhabitants carefully. Here's a preliminary list:

David Suzuki
Stéphane Dion (he even has a dog named Kyoto)
Al Gore
Me
You
[livejournal.com profile] patchfire because I don't go anywhere without her.
[livejournal.com profile] topaz7 for her love for the spotted owls and the ability to discuss politics endlessly without gagging
[livejournal.com profile] songdog because she's my sister and all cool and environmental.
[livejournal.com profile] mr_t00by, who is maybe even more environmentally inclined than his mother.
A bunch more of our flist(s)
Benton Fraser. Yeah, he's fictional. I do not care. They need cops, and besides, you just know he recycles.
Ina May Gaskin, because people will be having babies, y0.
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

...and so on.

This is where it gets fun - 'First Nations' include non-Canadian Inuits, but do not include Canadian Inuits. The reason being that the Nunavut lot arrived separately from the others after the Beringia land bridge between Russia and North America (no Alaska then obviously) disappeared -presumably they came by boat or spaceship. They have actually tracked the path of spear-heads across the countries though, and found that they came from very early boats, as far as they can tell.
To include everyone, it is "Aboriginal peoples of canada" - still, anything is better than 'eskimo'.

When I was a kid, we didn't even know about pollution. Smoking was still good for your health back then as well.

Can we add Paul in there, just because arts define our culture and since he acts, writes, directs, produces, composes and sings and plays guitar, then we get 1 person for the price of 7, and that's gotta be good for population control and climate change!

Yeah. "Eaters of raw flesh" isn't exactly complimentary.

He probably recycles, too. And he's a very patriotic Canadian, so he's probably all about the environmental protection stuff. Not to mention that part of any environmental plan has got to be aesthetics.
