I spent seven hours or so today (actually, yesterday, since it's past midnight) at Chez croosa/tapped_trish.

At one point in the day, all my kids were there, plus Trish and baby-in-progress (I mean, she couldn't exactly walk around without him/her, y'know?) Also zacks, Trish's mum, mr_t00by's girlfriend, and various friends and relatives (and one other baby-in-progress! *g*)

It was great weather for sitting outside, because it was kind of overcast and I could hang out without passing out, which is what I would have done if the sun had been blazing. Except I forgot that, hello, sunburn happens even if there's no sun in these cases. So now I'm pretty pink, and it's not a pretty pink. At least it's not a horrible sunburn, no peeling or blistering and it'll be gone by tomorrow. Still, no sunscreen is a bad thing.

Oh, and I played beer pong. I've never played beer pong before. I'm so not one of the cool kids.

I have no living grandparents. I remember my Gramma used to make jonnycakes, mmmm. She also made these amazing sugar cookies with nutmeg that will never be duplicated.

Seven pounds, exactly. My mother was actually unconscious for the whole thing. *boggles*

What would you do if you were stranded on an island with the person you hate most?

I actually don't hate anyone; I tried doing that, it's too much work. If I were stranded with the person I dislike the most? Work with her to get off the island. She's evil, but she's clever. All that conniving and scheming she does would come in handy when we needed to figure out a plan for rescue. After we were rescued I'd get as far away from her as I can.

I am most opposed to:

Jellyfish. They're everywhere in RI in summer. I've never been stung, but I hear it hurts like blazes.

It completely varies. I live in the Providence/Pawtucket area, and it's pretty diverse. Yay!

What object have you broken most recently?

The insulation around the back door of my apartment, from when I was trying to get in with a credit card because I didn't have the key.

This video, actually. In a really good way. *g*

Holding the part that holds the wine. That is, until I inevitably break them. Currently I drink my wine from a coffee mug. So far, so good.

I did. Enjoy middle school, that is. Then again, The Beloved always maintains I was was born middle aged, so that's probably why nothing touched me, then.

I'm still not sure about the whole friending etiquette, but I just added you to my reading list. Do the same if you like, no worries if you don't. It's a lovely long weekend here, life is sweet.

Seriously, I think most of these memes are written by twelve-year-old girls (or maybe Seamus Finnigan twelve-year-old boys who are really in touch with their own sexuality).

Someday I should write a crack!meme satirizing middle-school survey-writers. The only problem is I don't know if I really want to take on a junior high mindset. Been there, SO done that.

Hah, and my most vivid memory of a plane that size was coming into DC from Columbus, and the pilot gets on and says, "so, on our approach, you may see some emergency vehicles. They're only there as backup." Say WHAT???

Word on the Alaska thing, too - I'm kind of trepidacious about moving back, because while I bitch and moan about how I can get indepth political news up here (except online), I'm nervous going back to the meatgrinder.

You're moving back? My condolences Move to New England! We're most like Canada, social values-wise, or so says Michael Adams.

I've found pretty decent political news on CBC, namely Politics. I've found other places, too, i.e. apparently there's this, which looks sort of like the Canadian version of C-SPAN, and also Talk Politics. That's all online, yes, but it's also on television, at least in the case of the two political shows.

The only problem with living in RI and watching such dorkfests is I have nobody to rant and/or gush at. There's just nobody around who'd be interested in knowing what I think about the possibility of yet another Québec election or whether their Liberal Finance Minister is a staunch patriot or is just being stubborn.

Oh, and I wanted to tell you how much I'm liking reading the Barlow book. Okay, it's a bit alarmist, but I think maybe people need to be alarmed. And the sources cited are pretty Google-able. Of course, I hated NAFTA going in, but um. Yeah.

I don't get a choice - I'm being transferred to Milwaukee* for six weeks or more. The idea is to eventually send me back up here, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

And CBC could never be what I was looking for - prior to here I spent 10 hours a day in my car with NPR. And then went home and read blogs. It's very weird, and maybe you know, because the Canadians I've asked this have no idea: news. CBC doesn't broadcast a lot of new, hard news. They've got an hour in the evenings, but even that gets fluffy by the end. Whereas we have no shortage of news, whether by our own making, or by just playing off some article in Europe - I'm thinking of shows like Talk of the Nation, Fresh Air, Here & Now, etc. When I asked around about why there isn't more news being broadcast, I got responses ranging from "I don't think anyone cares" to "there just isn't any news". It boggles the mind!

And one reason I think she and Hurtig are so alarmist is that there really isn't the organized grassroots lefty groups running around up here, or not like we've got 'em. I can only think of two (Barlowe's Council of Canadian Citizens being one) and they're more think-tanky. So they're trying to research policy and sound the alarm, where we'd make MoveOn or whoever to do the outreach.

Are you talking about The National or the various News at Six incarnations? The National has a lot of filler (here's what's going to happen to this tree that fell yesterday!), but it gives a nice overview, and I like Peter Mansbridge's manner. It's like I'm watching someone's Uncle Pete's giving the highlights of the day. Although he seems to be "away" a lot, or even more news-guy-esque, "on assignment".

I think Politics is pretty indepth (although what's up with "Welcome to the brooooaaaaddcaaast"?). CNN is the fluffy one in comparison there, although it's not a very good comparison in the first place.
Sometimes I'll look at the local news broadcasts, mostly from the Maritimes and the North. If I'm listening online, it's usually the Ottawa station for the same reason I hit the DC stations: A political junkie needs her fix.

CBC radio has more news content than does their TV, at least what I can watch online. The Current had a whole thing on the possible parity of the USD and CAD and how it's got people talking about a common currency again.

I have no idea. The Canadians I know IRL are like most of the non-Canadians I know IRL: None of them are very interested in news or politics. The people who thing I'm weird transcend international borders.

Maybe it's because Canada's not used to right-wing extremists like we are here in Bushland? It's easy to get complacent if you don't think you have anything to worry about. As far as being alarmist goes, I think Hurtig's comes across as more of an alarmist than Barlow, even if they're saying essentially the same things (I haven't finished the last section or so of Hurtig's book because I can't find it. I heart my minimal brain dysfunction). Neither of them are as blatantly alarmist as some well-known American activists tend to be *coughMichaelMoorecough*

I think this might be cultural. Americans are good at putting out the idea and getting the facts later. It wouldn't surprise me if Canadians are more cautious. I'm probably just talking out of my arse, though, because I've never really asked, because, well. See above sentence about Americans. *g*

Up until the last election, we had Lincoln Chafee, the bestest Republican to come down the (Narraganset Turn)pike since his father, John Chafee. Lincoln Chafee's the guy who did this wonderful thing. Now we've got Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat, who is okay, although I haven't investigated him much, shame on me. But really, if he ever got to be President? There'd be a Whitehouse in the White House. :) We've also got Jack Reed. He's okay, I guess. Now we have two Democrats, but I still miss Chafee. I hope he comes back and runs for governor. I bet a hundred bucks that if he does, it won't be as a Republican.

No. And the reason I didn't have the key is that it apparently fell out of my luggage on a flight to Atlanta. So it wasn't really my fault. :P Then when I got back it took forever for the guy who pretends to take care of the apartment to actually make me new ones.
