WHERE I COME FROM:
Birth to age 16, suburban Massachusetts north of Boston. 16 to just recently, all over Rhode Island. Now I'm back in Massachusetts. USA, all.
WHAT DO YOU CALL:
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?
Brook, or stream if it's smaller. I've used creek, rarely.
2. What the thing you push around the grocery store is called?
Shopping cart or carriage. (
patchfire calls it a 'buggy', which amuses me to no end).
3. A metal container to carry a meal in?
Lunchbox.
4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?
Frying pan or skillet.
5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?
Sofa, although I've been known to use 'couch'.
6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?
Downspout, I guess.
7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?
Porch.
8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?
When I was a kid, we called it tonic. Apparently it's not a term much used in Massachusetts anymore. In RI it's soda, and that's what I call it now.
9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?
Pancake or Johnnycake. These are two different foods.
10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?
Sub or grinder.
11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?
Swimming trunks or bathing suit.
12. Shoes worn for sports?
Sneakers.
13. Putting a room in order?
Tidying up.
14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?
Firefly.
15. The little insect that curls up into a ball?
Pillbug.
16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?
Seesaw.
17. How do you eat your pizza?
With my hands. And anchovies, onions and feta cheese (I call it the Halitosis Pizza).
18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?
Garage sale or yard sale, depending on whether it's in a garage or a yard.
19. What's the evening meal?
Supper or dinner. It was always 'supper' when I was little.
20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?
The basement, if it's finished and made into a room. The cellar if it's just a furnace and water heater and boxes and stuff. My mother always said 'downcellar' as a location.
21. What do you call the thing that you can get water out of to drink in public places?
Drinking fountain, although it's a bubbler in RI (pronounced 'bubblah').
Okay, now back to Northern Exposure. Why on Earth didn't I watch this show when it was out?

Date: 2008-04-10 03:07 am (UTC)I hope you don't mind me asking about the fic recs? I love NX (it's one of my all time favourite tv shows) but I've never been able to find much fic for it. I've seen a few Chris/Joel fics that were decent but I have yet to find a decent Joel/Maggie fic ... or any het fic for the show. (Not that I'm adverse to the slash - I'm not - but Joel/Maggie was my OTP for that show and I'd love to read a really good J/M fic!)

I have written a gen story I'm pretty proud of (Merry Christmas, Dr. Fleischman) and a tiny porny ficlet (Alive, Chris/Maggie NC17) for a porn battle prompt. (Yeah, I prefer Joel/Maggie, but this was the prompt. And somehow Joel/Maggie porn would be fraught, you know? I'd rather have a long Joel/Maggie story with a bit of smut in it, I think.)

Date: 2008-04-10 03:29 am (UTC)This is awesome - especially because I didn't realize that there was this much fic out there. I am a member of the Pop849 community and I think that was the only thing I found for fic for the show. I think if the show as airing now it would be hugely popular on LJ but since it was aired in the early 90's there just isn't too much out there.
So, this is wonderful - thank you! :) :)

Date: 2008-04-10 04:48 am (UTC)due South was mid-90s (94-99) and it's got a very active fandom with quite a bit of fic. Who knows why some older shows have fan activity and some don't? There could probably be a heck of a lot of meta discussion around the question, I guess.
Also, if you like NX, you'd probably love dS. If you haven't seen it, that is. Or even if you have. *g*

Date: 2008-04-10 04:51 am (UTC)Though I will say that from what I've seen that the popularity is more because it's more easily slashed? Am I wrong on that? That's the impression I get from an outsiders perspective. (And that's not a bad thing at all - cuz those boys were hot! :D)
But I'd totally read a crossover if ... ya know ... someone wrote it. just sayin' ... ;)

Date: 2008-04-10 11:38 am (UTC)You're probably right. It's very slashable because, at least in the last two seasons the subtext was deliberate. Practically text. :)
And that's not a bad thing at all - cuz those boys were hot! :D
Hot doesn't begin to describe them. And it's good on top of that. I mean, I'd watch Paul Gross recite the alphabet for an hour (and not just to hear him say 'X-Y-Zed'), but the quality added to all that pretty is really what hooked me on the show.
But I'd totally read a crossover if ... ya know ... someone wrote it. just sayin' ... ;)
Oh, I'd LOVE to do that! I'd probably need a co-writer who was a hardcore NX fan, though. But gah, what an idea. I can't think of two otherwise unrelated shows that are more suited to a crossover than NX and dS. At least from the four NX eps I've seen so far.

Date: 2008-04-10 11:48 pm (UTC)I'm kind of a lazy writer (*snorts* that's an understatement) but I'd be happy to bounce ideas off of if you ever DO write it. :D :D :D

Date: 2008-04-10 11:42 am (UTC)And knowing your special interest in childbirth, there are some eps you will ADORE.
I'm generally snarky and hypercritical of media birth depiction (woman clutches her abdomen in sudden searing pain and goes on to scream her way through giving birth to a newborn that looks like a six-month-old, blech) , but sometimes there are shows that pleasantly surprise me.

Date: 2008-04-10 03:05 am (UTC)The show did jump the shark in the last season and a bit in the second to last season as well ... but up until then it was quality writing.
*ALAS - this is the only NX icon I have left. I used to have more ...

Date: 2008-04-10 11:46 am (UTC)That's exactly how I feel about Slings & Arrows (which only has eighteen episodes instead of a bunch of seasons). I'll definitely watch all of NX, because I'm loving it so far.

I really need to bring back my NX icons ... :D Anyway. Um. Hi. :D
