Because I need distraction and also because I love linguistic stuff, a meme! By way of everyone, most recently [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl:

WHERE I COME FROM:

Birth to age 16, suburban Massachusetts north of Boston. 16 to just recently, all over Rhode Island. Now I'm back in Massachusetts. USA, all.

WHAT DO YOU CALL:

1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?

Brook, or stream if it's smaller. I've used creek, rarely.

2. What the thing you push around the grocery store is called?

Shopping cart or carriage. ([livejournal.com profile] patchfire calls it a 'buggy', which amuses me to no end).

3. A metal container to carry a meal in?

Lunchbox.

4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?

Frying pan or skillet.

5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?

Sofa, although I've been known to use 'couch'.

6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?

Downspout, I guess.

7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?

Porch.

8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?

When I was a kid, we called it tonic. Apparently it's not a term much used in Massachusetts anymore. In RI it's soda, and that's what I call it now.

9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?

Pancake or Johnnycake. These are two different foods.

10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?

Sub or grinder.

11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?

Swimming trunks or bathing suit.

12. Shoes worn for sports?

Sneakers.

13. Putting a room in order?

Tidying up.

14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?

Firefly.

15. The little insect that curls up into a ball?

Pillbug.

16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?

Seesaw.

17. How do you eat your pizza?

With my hands. And anchovies, onions and feta cheese (I call it the Halitosis Pizza).

18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?

Garage sale or yard sale, depending on whether it's in a garage or a yard.

19. What's the evening meal?

Supper or dinner. It was always 'supper' when I was little.

20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?

The basement, if it's finished and made into a room. The cellar if it's just a furnace and water heater and boxes and stuff. My mother always said 'downcellar' as a location.

21. What do you call the thing that you can get water out of to drink in public places?

Drinking fountain, although it's a bubbler in RI (pronounced 'bubblah').

Okay, now back to Northern Exposure. Why on Earth didn't I watch this show when it was out?

Oh, you should see as much as you can. Awesome, fun show. And knowing your special interest in childbirth, there are some eps you will ADORE.

I've finished the first four eps and they're ready to go back to Netflix for the next installments. Whee!

And knowing your special interest in childbirth, there are some eps you will ADORE.

I'm generally snarky and hypercritical of media birth depiction (woman clutches her abdomen in sudden searing pain and goes on to scream her way through giving birth to a newborn that looks like a six-month-old, blech) , but sometimes there are shows that pleasantly surprise me.

Nah, this is an episode in which everybody scares a pregnant Shelly with horror stories about childbirth and raising children, and she runs off into the woods and encounters a "support group" made up of famous historical mothers, run by Mother Nature (who is totally kick-ass). It's really fun. One of the episodes that has stuck in my brain, you know.

I may have to rewatch these myself.

Oh, that sounds like a great concept! Maybe I should torrent these instead of waiting around for Netflix.

My favourite character so far is Marilyn. If I ever write this hypothetical crossover there will SO be Fraser-Marilyn dialogue.

Which reminds me: Strangers in a Strange Land is a bunch of tiny crossovers between NX and other stuff, including dS. Not my favorite story, but a clever concept, and I recognized most of the crossovers at least vaguely. My favorite one is the HP cross!

I could be wrong but I think this one will pleasantly surprise you. It's one of my favorite episodes. I especially loved the concept ...
