Wait. Most people see the dancer in this image going anti-clockwise? And they can make her change direction?

Obviously, I'm way right-brained. But then I knew that. But seriously, woah. It's no wonder I have no sense of direction whatsoever.

Also, meresy and nos4a2no9, we must talk dinner and things! mr_t00by and I will be in Toronto on 7/27 or thereabouts.

I've never been able to see her going anti-clockwise. Always clockwise. And never, ever, ever able to make her change direction.

Until just now. I stared at her head for a bit, and then relaxed the focus of my eyes, and I saw her change.

I can see a little hitch in the movement if I focus. Right now I have sore eyes, so I'm not going to stare for TOO long. :)

Some of the comments at the bottom of the page say she always turns clockwise, but I don't think so, since not ALL of them do.

She almost always starts clockwise for me, but I can make it seem like she's going the other way too. :)

Same here. She starts clockwise but I can get her to change direction with a little patience and unfocusing of my eyes. It seems to be easiest if I look to the left of her for a second or two and then look back. :)

That's what I did too. She was going clockwise when I first loaded the page, but switched as I was reading the text to the left of the picture.

Yeah, the play's on the evening of the 26th, so we'll be there sometime in late morning early afternoon on the 27th. Whee! mr_t00by will love Toronto, I'm thinking. He also likes all kinds of food, same as me, so we can eat anywhere good. Maybe an Asian place that doesn't cost a fortune or something. :D

When I opened the link, I saw a dancer going clockwise.
Then I tried to imagine her dancing anti-clockwise, but nothing changed. Then I started to read the text on the left and when I looked at the dancer again, she was dancing anti-clockwise! :-OOO

I can do it with a little concentration, which is weird. It's really COOL when you make it go the other way, and it's almost like I can feel the left bit of my brain kick in.

That's got to be a trick, right? I mean, the site comes up and the dancer is going in one direction, and then after you've had time to read the paragraph and start concentrating, trying to will yourself to see her going in the other direction, the .gif changes and really does go in the other direction. I can't believe that's a matter of dominance in the brain. I think that site is jerking people around.

It isn't a trick, it's a very famous perceptional illusion. My husband uses it (or one of the many of them) when he teaches classes on perception :D

I can make it change direction, but it takes me awhile...

PS: the right brain/ left brain stuff is really theoretically debatable at this point. Most perception folks (like my husband) will agree it's bunk.

Darn, I don't remember which way I used to see her all the time when this was first passed around. But I eventually got to the point where I could make her swap by concentrating on her feet or hands.

Yeah, it's clearly clockwise. To tell, you just need to know your left foot from your right.

The first time I saw this she was going one way (I forget which) then I refreshed the screen and she went the other. I immediately thought someone was taking the mickey because nearly every time I refreshed she changed direction.

Today I tried to see if I could make her change direction the way one of your earlier commenters suggested. By letting the picture go out of focus - a bit like you do to see 3D pictures - she changes every time I do it. Curious.

I actually did a poll on this to see if right or left handed people were more apt to see her turn one way or the other way first. (For the record: I can't make her turn at all. My daughter can make her turn at will.) I think if you go look at my tags for polls it wasn't too far back.

I read this whole test as more of an eye trick a la those magic eye things that were so popular in the 1990s. I have never been able to see one of those, no matter what I did. They just gave me a splitting headache. The dancer lady...I saw her whichever way right brained ppl are supposed to see her and couldn't make her change, until maybe the 4th time I tried, when I figured out some trick with my eyes. I don't want to try it again today, cause I've been so migrainey this week. That's a fun one, isn't it?

She goes clockwise for me. And I can make her change to counter-clockwise if I work at it, but it takes a while. Interesting that reading seems to do it for many people - as I recall, language is processed in the left brain (except for poetry and music, which is processed in the right).

Ah Toronto. I still haven't made it there yet. It's on my list, though. :-)

We're going to Stratford first (a ticket for Hamlet is mr_t00by's birthday present this year), then we'll go to Toronto because I figure he'd like that (plus meeting up with meresy and nos4a2no9, who live in the [relative] area). After that, we'll go to Ottawa because, um. Because we're going to Ottawa. Because it is There.
