It's BP. Has not been British Petroleum for years. It's a multi-national corporation with the largest single percentage of shares owned by an American bank. (JP Morgan and Chase own 27.74%) As a company, it still sucks and has made some incredibly bad decisions, but calling it by its old name is, I feel, a way people are using to attribute blame to the UK for this appalling disaster. Whether that's oversensitive or not, it troubles me, and I don't feel like not speaking up this time.

They're not using that name anymore? I didn't even think about it, because I keep seeing the name everywhere--places like this and this. And there's this ironic job offer.

I promise, the idea that the UK was responsible for the oil spill because of the name of the company never entered my mind, not even once. No offence against the UK was ever intended. I was just mentioning the name of a company--there are zillions of companies whose names contain the names of countries--and I just think of them as companies. And I'll change it because I honestly don't mean (or want) to misrepresent.

If any country is at fault, it's the US for not having failsafes in place by law, not to mention that we Americans are more addicted to oil than any other people, and we keep not doing anything at all about it.

Yeah, they haven't been British Petroleum for some time (since 2001). People that keep using it...IDK. Maybe they think it's more amusing? Maybe they're very out of date? Maybe they're just tools? Who knows?

I wouldn't have thought it would enter your mind, tbh, it's just not a good time to be British, right now, and we (read me) don't need any more potential crap. It's my issue, not yours, but thank you for changing it. <3

We all need to do better with oil. A LOT better.

Leave it to the press to be entirely inaccurate in big areas and then try to keep their credibility. Grr.

I don't know what's up with the job offer thing--it seems to be another branch of BP (their supposed "green" branch, which is painfully ironic even to think about.

I haven't heard about any bad stuff about the UK--probably because I tend to watch/listen to the progressive stuff and they're not about blaming countries, I dunno. I believe you when you say it's there, though, and ick. That's just awful.

We all need to do better with oil. A LOT better.

Eventually we're all going to run out, and then we'll have no choice. Although I don't think it's at all fringe-y to say that when we finally do run out, there's a real possibility that "civilization" will come to a crashing halt. Because it's not just gas and heat and light, it's building structures and pipes and medical equipment. Scary stuff.

I just hope this kind of disaster is at least the very beginning of a wakeup call for everyone. This is what oil does, and oh, by the way, we're going to run out of it.

And btw, I've always been a fan of the UK, even before I knew diddly about politics (hey, I've been using a dorky bastardised version of British spelling since I was twelve because I think it's prettier *g*). Also, two words: Monty Python.
