Welcome to 1984.

In other news, it took the death of singer Elliot Smith for me to discover a.) that he even existed, and b.) that he made some very, very lovely music. It's sad that his death is what introduced me to his music.

that's fucking ridiculous...on the other hand, i grew up about an hour from there and i can very easily see the same thing happening in my very conservative, religious community.

i'm glad you've discovered elliot smith's music...elliot was my cousin's roommate and was an amazing creator. he'll be missed.

elliott smith was great... it's funny, i've known about him for years, but i didn't buy an album of his (xo) until the day before he killed himself. and it's a really good cd... if you'd like me to burn you a copy, i'll give it to hannah for you... take care.

Yeah, I also hadn't heard of Elliot Smith until [livejournal.com profile] lallumeur posted about his death. Now I realize I've heard his music in movies, and will have to investigate further when finances allow. It's sad to discover people through their obits.

Sometimes I think that "zero tolerance" is just short-hand for "zero ability to assess and respond to complex situations and circumstances in a manner that is fair to all involved."

Wow. Tell it, Girlfriend.

Good lord. I could understand it if the girl had named a teacher in her writing, but she didn't. And not only that, even if the teacher confiscated it, what right did he have to read it? Poor girl, I feel for her.

I really hope that the ACLU has been alerted. Zero Tolerance, nothing. Zero brain cells, is what this is. And Zero Freedom, which is something the current US regime touts as sacred.

Oh, that's scary. I live in DeKalb so my ickle sibs go there instead of Fulton, but our house is literaly on the dividing line between the two counties. Both school systems are ridiculous, but stuff like this is just messed up. You know, I never thought I'd be happy to say I went to high school in Alabama, and yet...

Yeah, high school. A fun place. I don't like the comparison with the book that everyone seems to be making, because a bunch of stupid people whose bad decisions are overturned does not 1984 make.

Well, no, but it seems to be one in a string of bad decisions happening these days.

It may be overstating, but not an entirely off analogy. Eh.
