Put iTunes (or an equivalent) on shuffle, take the first line from the first 20 songs and use them to make a poem. Use the first line of the 21st song as the title.

Feel free to guess what songs they are. Some of them are pretty obscure and others are hella obvious.

When You Grab Hold of Me

Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry;
He's still kickin', kickin' his shadow.
She came on like the night and she held on tight;
Watch out now, take care, beware,
how can it be permissible?

When you're weary, feeling small,
uncommon amount of the time at home.
Spotcheck Billy got down on his hands and knees--
when I think of those East End Lights,
hast Du etwas Zeit für mich?

Window walkin' downtown, feelin' mighty good;
I can hear her heartbeat from a thousand miles.
Anytime, any day, you can hear the people say,
"It could have been me, but it was you."
Fat Charlie the archangel sloped into the room

Well, some men like a woman with a beautiful body;
I don't go where you go.
She came in through the bathroom window;
I don't want somebody to love me.

Reply to this post, and I'll give you a random letter, and you have to find five songs that start with that letter and post them to your journal.

[livejournal.com profile] topaz7 gave me an L! So here goes:

1. Lonely Days (Pre-disco Bee Gees) - I know the Bee Gees are associated with All Things Disco, but before that they recorded some amazing, haunting, beautiful songs. I must admit, I like their disco, but it doesn't hold a candle to the stuff that came before it.

2. Language or the Kiss (Indigo Girls) I've linked to this before. It's one of my favourite songs lyrically. Angsty and beautiful, it's about choices, and how one isn't necessarily better than the other, and that all choices bring pain with the leaving behind.
My favourite lyrics are these:

I said to you the one gift which I'd adore
The package of the next 10 years unfolding
But you told me if I had my way I'd be bored
Right then I knew I loved you best born of your scolding

When we last talked we were lying on our backs
Looking at the sky through the ceiling
I used to lie like that alone out on the driveway
Trying to read the greek upon the stars
The alphabet of feeling

Oh I knew back then
It was a calling that said if joy, then pain
The sound of the voice these years later
Is still the same

3, Lady Blue (Leon Russell) I've known this song since I was a young teenager. It never gets old. Of all the so-called 'sensual' songs (whatever that means) I've heard, this is one of the best. Languid and full of all things erotic, with an overtone of complete, undying love. I like that. :)

So if you want it to be real good to ya,
when I'm layin' here makin' love to ya,
listen real close to me baby,
you just wait and see, lady,
I've got a lotta love to give ya,
I've got a whole life to spend if you'll
just let me sing sweet love song
Lady Blue

Yes, I'm hyperfocussed, but I can see Eddie all over this song.

4. Like the Way I Do (Melissa Etheridge) If this song needs an explanation, I'm Harpo Marx. Intense and angry, it's about jealousy, plain and simple. And gods, it's gorgeous. She's gorgeous.

Can I survive all the implications
Even if I tried could you be less than an addiction
Don't you think I know there's so many others
Who would beg steal and lie fight kill and die
Just to hold you hold you like I do

Apparently Jann Arden recorded a version of this. I would love to have a copy of her recording. *bats eyes beseechingly at flist*

5. Last Stand in Open Country (Farm Dogs). Some of you will be familiar with Willie Nelson's version of this song, and yes, it's lovely and poignant and introspective and it's Willie, who is wonderful, but it doesn't even begin to compare to the original. Because the original is by Farm Dogs, and Farm Dogs is Bernie, my Bernie, who I'll love 'til I die, and isn't this just the perfect song for him, the aging musician facing the younger ? The writing credits for the song go to the whole band, but I'll bet cold cash that it was Bernie who wrote most, if not all of the lyrics and the band wrote the music, just like Bernie does, has always done, and OMG, it's so gorgeous. And on top of it all, the first two verses completely scream Eddie Dean and with the chorus--well. Is this not prophetic and so, so right? See for yourself:

I was looking for America, in a western movie
Saw a young gunslinger with something to prove
And I came lookin' like anybody else,
I came searchin' like anybody else
Lookin' for that golden calf.

And I came shooting for the stars, like any young blood
I found a fat cat city and crooked judge
I killed anything standing in my path
I killed anything till I laid my hands
Laid'em on the golden calf

CHORUS:
Now it's our last stand in open country
This is my last chance to be with you
This is the last dance fot this kind of man
I'm still lookin' for something to prove

The last verse belongs to Bernie. And to me, as well, say true. *sigh*:

But there's always someone faster
Someone quicker on the draw
Someone with a hunger closin' in
Someone younger steppin' up to be
The next outlaw
