How is it bad for the environment? You're not going to throw out your money, are you? It doesn't need to decompose. You keep it around in your wallet. And it doesn't tear. Because it's plastic!

They recycle the money once they're done with it, and it gets made into things like compost bins, rubbish bins, plumbing fittings, you name it. I don't see how recycling it could be bad for the environment...

It's the manufacturing of the new articles. The melting down of plastics releases chemicals into the environment that contribute to the greenhouse effect.
