I mean, geez. They're raising money to put an ad in the NY Times!!!! Directed at JKR, apparently. Because of course, she reads the NY Times with her English Breakfast tea every morning whilst sitting in her kitchen in England where of course the NYT is SO relevant to British life because OMG the US is the CAPITAL OF THE WORLD, and therefore everyone must know what goes on there at all times.

If anyone takes out an ad in the Providence Journal I shall die from amusement. C'mon, Rhode Island. I double-dog-dare you.

I wonder if part of the magnitude of the H/Hr reaction comes from the fact that it's a het ship. I mean, there hasn't been nearly the same backlash in the R/S community, has there? (I confess that I don't know for sure -- that's a ship I don't spend much time watching, let along sailing.) My thinking is that slashers are used to having canon upend our pairings (pun intended), because authors usually don't make gay relationships canonical. Het shippers, on the other hand, had at least a whiff of actual possibility, so when that's taken away, the disappointment is that much greater.

I need to think about this some more. If it goes somewhere, I might post it in my journal.

You'd think they would either have picked up on the "subtle as a 2x4 between the eyes" hints over the last three books, or developed a blithe disregard for canon, one way or another. Either works. Heaven knows other ships in other fandoms have gone along the "oops, we were wrong" path, or the "who cares what the creator says" route, or done both. This is just... weird.

Nope! ashkitty and I stayed up till 4 am reading the mind-bogglingly batshit insane stuff they've been writing and laughing repeatedly. Okay, we stayed up that late because it was too hot to sleep, but we enjoyed the entertainment. :) It's like watching someone get their tongue stuck to a metal post in winter, you know? You feel sorry for them, because they just look so incredibly stupid, and they did it ALL BY THEMSELF, but you have to laugh until you nearly cry, because OMG THEY LOOK SO INCREDIBLY STUPID!

Oh. We also read ginny_weasley's essay on why H/Hr is not canon, written in the days BEFORE HBP. She's quite snarkalicious. I look forward to trolling through the comments today, now that I've slept, and watching more of the mental patients shippers go nuts.

My God that petition is funny! I fail to see the heartbreak - though that could be because a. I'm a die hard slasher - and the thought of JK putting gay pairings in the book is almost as delusional, and b. I'm not a fan of Harry/Hermione and never saw the 'hints' that were apparently there. I mean - I thought it was obvious from book 1 that Ron and Hermione were going to be the next Mr. and Mrs. Weasley and that Harry would end up with Ginny (especially after JK spent most of the 5th book saving her character).

My friend directed me over here. I have a very similar rant in my LJ! It's just too FUNNY. I'm a diehard R/Hr, so maybe I shouldn't be talking, but... Personally, I died laughing when I read JKR's interview. Now, if she had said, "R/Hr? Are you kidding? That's soooo last week," I would have been teh sadd, and prouted. But putting up a petition?
