The price has been reduced on my dream home. It's gone from $92,000 to $86,000. CAD. Which means in American, the asking price is $76,040.47.

I should investigate this, just to see if

*angsts* FIVE BEDROOMS. 1.26 acres. In the most gorgeous place on the planet. For less than what some cars cost.

Look what happens in summer! And there's nature! and history! and yay, it's also pretty in winter!

Woe.

My family is here. That's really most of it. I used to say it's cold and, erm. Cold. But I've only been to Cape Breton in winter and I still felt like I was coming home to somewhere I'd never been, so I bet I could deal. With a nice cozy woodstove.

And universal healthcare. :)

I think nurses are needed everywhere, so I probably could find a job, and everything.

And yay, I love this fic! I'd forgotten about it. Ray should so not be fictional. He could come to my ceilidhs. After all, he's my fake!brother-in-law. *g*

Tell em you'll take it if they throw in the harp *g*

It is absolutely divine, and I don't know why it's so cheap. Well, I have some idea. What a bargain.

buy it! buy it! buy it

If I was really able to do it, I'd take it if they threw garbage all over it. The harp would be a plus, though.

It is absolutely divine, and I don't know why it's so cheap. Well, I have some idea. What a bargain.

It's cheap because the economy is terrible, from what I see. The mines are closed, now, and they were a big source of income. Bras d'Or is a tourist spot, so I dunno. I do think I'd be able to find work, though.

buy it! buy it! buy it

I want to, I want to. I'm flat broke My funds are low, but it probably wouldn't take a lot of time to get a down payment. My credit sucks, but the mortgage couldn't be very high in the first place, so a couple years of higher mortgage would probably be doable.

Fortunately, this kind of bargain isn't uncommon in the region. Unfortunately for the region, though, because it's a reflection of how bad the local economy is. I don't know if it's the mines closing, the fishing industry crashing and burning and everyone going down the road, or a combination. Probably the combo.

It's a gorgeous, breathtaking, gentle place. Even the city feels rural, and that's just the way I like it. And the music, OMG. That's the first thing I fell in love with, over ten years ago.

This is the best one I've found (I've been checking off and on for weeks to see if anyone bought it) but there's always something good that comes up. Property values in the area are really low all the time.

If I did move, we could band together and take over Nova Scotia or something. :)

Capers have an accent that's different from the rest of Canada. It's gorgeous, very brogue-y.

RI prices are through the roof, too. Oregon's cheap, and Georgia (I price stuff there all the time, too).

If I could move my kids and my mom, I'd go right away. Also, I'd need to save some because moving is expensive. But yes, you're right.

I'm thinking that if I save enough, I could buy a house and use it for vacations, which would be weird since I don't even own a nonvacation house at the moment.

I had no idea there were places in North America where you could buy more than an acre of land and a large house for that kind of price. I don't think you could buy 1000 sq ft condo anywhere near where I live for that.

Cape Breton's unique, all right. For lots of lovely reasons. The cold and the distance from everything else are the big problem factors, other than that, it's all golden.

D00d. If somebody posted a listing for a house on 1.26 acres in Ireland for $76k and I was finished with this stupid doctorate, nothing in the world would keep me from it. My family would just have to come too understand. And maybe give me some money for a down payment until I could save up. Hey, I'm not above shameless begging.

(Notice how I used a maple leaf icon?)

If somebody posted a listing for a house on 1.26 acres in Ireland for $76k

"Don't you remember, Seanie, and how it was? The road led up past the chapel and it wound and it wound. And there was the field where Dan Tobin's bullock chased you. It was a lovely little house, Seaneen. And the roses! Well, your father used to tease me about them. But he was that proud of them too."

*uses brand-new Quiet Man icon*

I'd angst about a house in Ireland, too, but it'd be better because the idea of moving across the OCEAN would be completely impossible.

Cape Breton looks a lot like Western Ireland, and it's crawling with Celtic history. It's also the only area in the world that still speaks Gaelic as a living language (this would be Scots Gaelic, not Irish which is still spoken in pockets of Ireland). It feels more like a place in the Celtic world (which it is, o'course) than a place in Canada (which it also is, duh. *g*). Not surprising, since according to a survey done for Fire and Ice, people who live in Atlantic Canada tend to identify as residents of their province/region before they identify as Canadian.

Lovely maple leaf icon. Someday I'll wax boringly poetic about my lifelong relationship with maple trees, including one or two Amusing Childhood Anecdotestm involving [livejournal.com profile] songdog, and also include an essay about Grade B maple syrup and how it is far, far superior to Grade A (hey, I grew up in New England, we know our Maple Syrup).
