Stuff noticed while watching Northern Exposure (I'm in the middle of season 3 atm):

  • You can tell when the outdoor winter scenes are filmed out of season because you can't see anyone's breath.

  • Chris is supposed to be 28 in 1992, but he says he was seven in 1968. that would make him 31.

  • They got Holling's age right, but erm. Where did a Vincoeur from Québec get a Southern drawl?

  • Ditto Shelley. Did I miss the memo about how Saskatchewan packed up and moved to Mississippi? Wayne The Hockey Player, Shelley's ex, has a twang, too.

Maybe it's like South Park, only instead of having bisected heads, the Canadians on this show all talk like [livejournal.com profile] patchfire. Oh, teh irony. Yeah, I really do think.

  • Maggie looks like Leah Collins. She also looks like she could be related to Fraser, which brings up all kinds of plot bunnies. *chases off bunny that wants to bring Leah to Cicely*

  • Marilyn is becoming one of my very favourite characters ever, despite the fact that she hardly talks. Fraser and Marilyn would like each other a lot, I think. I can SO see her becoming Fraser's BFF. See above re: kinds of plot bunnies.

  • Nobody ever says what tribes Marilyn and Ed belong to (they're from two different ones, apparently). Maybe they had to get permission to use the name and either didn't ask or asked and weren't allowed? Also, Ed? Is my other favourite NX character.

  • Now that I've heard Chris read part of it, I suddenly want to read The Call of the Wild.

  • Speaking of Chris, there's this one ep where he shows up at the end wearing a suit with his hair cut. At the beginning of the next show he's got the long-and-scruffy look back. Hmm.

I can't believe I never watched this back in the day. But then I never watched that other show that everyone confuses with it, either. wtf?

More stuff to be posted when I notice it. I know you're all thrilled.

OMGSH i can't believe i found another NE fruit loop!!
I've been on it for a while, watched it back in the day, and now watch it before bed like comfort food.

I think there is a time when Joel discovers Yiddish words in Marilyn's speech patterns that the actual tribe comes out...and if I recall it's the same as Ed's. But I can't remember the name....maybe 5th season?
My absolute favorite character is Ruth-Anne...she KILLS!

Someday I'm gonna spring for the NX DVDs. I loved this show so hard when it was on, even (or maybe especially) when it went off the rails.

Hmmn, favorite character, let's see ... Chris, most likely, although Marilyn and Ed run a close second and third. But zomg, how could we forget about Officer Barbara Semanski? (Do you think it's possible for someone to be too law-and-order for even Fraser to stand?)

Oh, I loved this show! I was quite wee when it first aired (12, I think?) but I remember that my mom liked it and we'd sometimes watch it together. I think I'll have to hunt down the first couple of seasons on DVD and see if it's as fun as I remember. You certainly make it sound appealing, and I seem to remember that it had a magical-realism/offbeat character wackiness that I associate with due South. Must check this out.

And I second [livejournal.com profile] isiscolo's question: what show do people confuse it with?

My understanding is that Marilyn and Ed are both Tlingit, but they belong to the two different moieties within the larger Tlingit structure. I believe Marilyn is part of the Raven clan and Ed is from the Wolf clan. (See this Wikipedia article.) I forget if this is actually explained on the show or if I read it in an interview or article somewhere (or possibly made it up).

Re: accents: not only are Holling and Shelly hilarious, I enjoy the fact that Very Very Texan Janine Turner is supposedly playing a woman from Grosse Pointe, Michigan. Hee!

She also looks like she could be related to Fraser, which brings up all kinds of plot bunnies.

I...um. *also chases away plot bunnies* You're really quite correct there. I never noticed before. Also, she and Fraser would TOTALLY be BFF. Just as Fleishman and RayV would also get along like a house on fire.

The Call of the Wild is excellent. You can also read it in one sitting, which is nice. (And I totally didn't steal the plot from that episode for my first Fraser/Thatcher fic...not at all... *g*)

I'm guessing Twin Peaks. (But if there's something else people always confuse it with, I'd like to know, because I'm always on the lookout for shows that are similar to NX...)

Just as Fleishman and RayV would also get along like a house on fire.

OMG, yes! Fleishman would drive RayK to drink, though, probably literally. He'd probably like Maggie, though. She could teach him how to fly! He might like Chris, too, because on the outside he's a poet. :D And I can see him and Maurice bickering about the merits of '59 Caddies vs. '67 GTOs (I'm pretty sure Maurice's car is a '59--my mother had a similar one when I was a kid).

The casts of the two shows would fit together almost flawlessly. Which is why I have to write fic to that end.

(And I totally didn't steal the plot from that episode for my first Fraser/Thatcher fic...not at all... *g*)

You know, I thought about your fic while I was watching it. It was an inspired idea to borrow the setup. ;)

RayK would probably try to hit on Maggie at first, I think. *g* But they'd get along great, yes.

YES. Ed and RayK could probably bond as well.

YES, YES YOU DO.

Hee! Thanks!

(Also, you probably realized this, but in the earlier comment, I meant to say that Marilyn and Fraser would get along great, not him and Maggie. Although they'd probably like each other as well.)

If you like dS, chances are you'll like NX. They're not the same themewise, but they have so much in common in the quirkiness of the characters and the magical realism.

And it's kind of like the opposite with accents. In dS the American characters sound like Canadians and in NX it's the other way around.
