  • Fic summary: "A black Cadillac, sex, stolen money, and Alex Krycek. Does Scully need anything else?" My answer: Well, if she does I'd be glad to take her place.
  • I finished my paper. I'm actually pretty shocked I finished this early.
  • I've figured out how to send fic to my Kindle. This can never be good.
  • I'm not taking a holiday this summer. I was okay with it at first, but now I'm kind of depressed about it. I might, might, mind you, go here in October as consolation. Because I need to go to Cape Breton again. I really do. And what better time or reason than Celtic Colours?
  • I want some new icons but I don't have photoshop anymore. Alas.
  • I wish I could blow off school and just be fannish. Work is okay, because I need to get paid, but school is boring and all about a pipe dream and I'd rather be doing something for [personal profile] ds_snippets, dammit.
  • Speaking of fannish, I've probably missed a bazillion of posts, so I haven't read or commented on new fic.I will try to reconnect better in the future. See above about school.
  • I want to win powerball so I can buy a whole new wardrobe, starting with lots of stuff from here. Like maybe this And/or this and this. At the moment I have fuck all in the clothing department. And also in the money department.

    In conclusion, Delenn.

  • For the five or so people who haven't seen this, here's the video version of Jian Ghomeshi's interview with Hugh Dillon on CBC's Q:

  • CHURCHFAIL: I missed church today because I mistakenly thought the service started at 9:30, when it actually started at 9. I got there at like 9:03 and didn't want to barge into choir without having rehearsed this morning OR on Wednesday night (which was thankfully an excused absence) so I left without even getting out of my car. There was an 11:00 service I could have gone to but I was too embarrassed to do it. Hopefully I can explain myself adequately this Wednesday.

  • Yesterday I saw Capitalism: A Love Story at the Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge. As much as Michael Moore has his issues, I'm usually charmed and informed by his movies, and this one was no exception. I still might make a more indepth post about it, but the best thing I learned was what an amazing guy FDR was, and how radically different the world would be if he had lived to make his dream of a Second Bill of Rights real.

  • After the movie I went to Shabu-ya in Harvard Square for dinner. I had been looking for Shilla, where I always go when I'm in Harvard Square; apparently it has recently merged with another place owned by the same family into a shabu-shabu restaurant. Since I had no idea what shabu-shabu was or even that this particular place served it, I went with maguro sashimi and yummy seafood-scallion pancake. Nom nom. I sort of hate the Star Trek TOS-type decor, but the food was really good, so I'll definitely go back.

  • Firefox has been sucking recently--constantly crashing on me for no apparent reason. Is anyone else having the same problem or is it something to do with my computer? I suppose I should reinstall it to see if that helps, but I've been lazy about it.

  • Dear Flashpoint: Cop shows aren't supposed to make me cry. I forgive you completely, however, because you are love with a side of awesomesauce.

  • Which brings me to the Song of the Day:

It's kind of obviously about residential schools (as much as any Hip song can be said to be about any one specific thing), but it also fits in with the themes of the episode really well. Flashpoint

Haven't done a random post of randomness in a while. Okay, here goes:

  • First of all, I sort of wrote something for the Badfic Challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] ds_flashfiction. Heartfelt shoutouts and/or apologies to Garrison Keillor, et. al. Warning: It's crack, pure and simple.

  • Speaking of Garrison Keillor, I heard today that he's suffered a small stroke. Apparently he's going to be okay and back to work soon. Definitely sending him good thoughts (and not saying a word about my story, which would likely give him a heart attack on top of things).

  • Last night I stayed up late finishing Cormac McCarthy's The Road. I really liked it, once I got past the prose style. There are no apostrophes and no quotation marks, which at first was off-putting, but really helps illustrate the bleak, pared-down world the main characters are walking through. I definitely recommend the book, although I'm not sure if it's Pulitzer Prize material. Don't let this put you off, though, because I don't think the Dark Tower is Pulitzer Prize material, either, and it's the Tale O' My Heart. If you like bleak, post-apocalyptic stories (and I do, oh, yes, I do!), this one's for you. Oh, and Viggo Mortenson is going to play the father in the movie version. This is all kinds of happy-making, Y? Y.

    ETA There's a TRAILER!

  • I've been having a torrid, obsessive love afair with Bruce Cockburn's music ever since [livejournal.com profile] songdog gave me a copy of The Charity of Night. Bruce is one of those guys I've known about since forever, and he even wrote a couple of my favourites ("If I had a Rocket Launcher" and "Call it Democracy"), but I've never really delved too deeply into his music before. And he's gooood, like, really, and he does that think-y, dark stuff I love. Here, see for yourself:

  • On a related note, [livejournal.com profile] peacey turned me onto DivShare, and I really love it. It does what Box.net used to do that either it doesn't do anymore or I can't figure out how to do it. I think I'm going to follow her lead and start posting a song of the day (it'll be the ADD version of Song of the Day, mind you, which may or may not be posted every day, or limited to once a day when it is). I'll try to refrain from making it All Bruce Cockburn, All the Time (see above re: torrid, obsessive love affair).

  • I went to my first choir rehearsal tonight. I think there's one person younger than me, and the rest are all over sixty. Still, I get to sing, and everyone's really nice, and it'll make me go to church, and I like church.

  • Tomorrow is my first RI Council meeting of MoveOn. I feel like I'm finally doing something besides mouthing off about stuff. And who knows, maybe somewhere in Washington the CIA will have a case study, in black and white, of my fingerprints. ;)

  • I need to pick up some more shifts. I've been lazy about doing it since I got back from Toronto, and it shows in my bank account. Bleh. I wish I were independently wealthy.

  • Oh, yeah, and speaking of Toronto, I did take pictures there (and also in London and Stratford), and I will definitely be posting them (the pics of [livejournal.com profile] mr_t00by are themselves worth the price of admission (if there was a price for admission, that is).

Stuff noticed while watching Northern Exposure (I'm in the middle of season 3 atm):

  • You can tell when the outdoor winter scenes are filmed out of season because you can't see anyone's breath.

  • Chris is supposed to be 28 in 1992, but he says he was seven in 1968. that would make him 31.

  • They got Holling's age right, but erm. Where did a Vincoeur from Québec get a Southern drawl?

  • Ditto Shelley. Did I miss the memo about how Saskatchewan packed up and moved to Mississippi? Wayne The Hockey Player, Shelley's ex, has a twang, too.

Maybe it's like South Park, only instead of having bisected heads, the Canadians on this show all talk like [livejournal.com profile] patchfire. Oh, teh irony. Yeah, I really do think.

  • Maggie looks like Leah Collins. She also looks like she could be related to Fraser, which brings up all kinds of plot bunnies. *chases off bunny that wants to bring Leah to Cicely*

  • Marilyn is becoming one of my very favourite characters ever, despite the fact that she hardly talks. Fraser and Marilyn would like each other a lot, I think. I can SO see her becoming Fraser's BFF. See above re: kinds of plot bunnies.

  • Nobody ever says what tribes Marilyn and Ed belong to (they're from two different ones, apparently). Maybe they had to get permission to use the name and either didn't ask or asked and weren't allowed? Also, Ed? Is my other favourite NX character.

  • Now that I've heard Chris read part of it, I suddenly want to read The Call of the Wild.

  • Speaking of Chris, there's this one ep where he shows up at the end wearing a suit with his hair cut. At the beginning of the next show he's got the long-and-scruffy look back. Hmm.

I can't believe I never watched this back in the day. But then I never watched that other show that everyone confuses with it, either. wtf?

More stuff to be posted when I notice it. I know you're all thrilled.

I've had the basics of this post for days. Apparently I'm going through a lazy phase. Or maybe I'm just plain lazy.

  • First of all, [livejournal.com profile] stormymouse, I did indeed get your card and the gentlemen who came with it. You guys are the best ever. :) I'm a little afraid to try him out. I need some courage, dudes.

  • Fannish meme from [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel, among others:

    mix-'n-match meme )

  • Speaking of [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel: This thread makes me want to make a dS Tarot Deck. Like, a real one. I bet there are places online where you can put your own images on cards and things. Anyone know of one?

  • [livejournal.com profile] mr_t00by's birthday was yesterday. He's eighteen, OMG. Yesterday we went to the Chapel as one of his presents. We stood up almost the whole time because standing room has a much better view of the field than the bleacher seats. Two national anthems, three-ish hours and thirteen runs (nine of ours, four of theirs) later the Sox had won, which means that I can hold my head up in Toronto next week. The only problem is, now the Evil Empire is in second place. [livejournal.com profile] eltonroo, you must throw Good Wishes at your team so they can pull back ahead of the Yankees. Just the Yankees, mind you, and after today's game. Don't go getting carried away or anything.

  • Fannish Notice: [livejournal.com profile] scally has posted some high-quality screencaps from Murder Most Likely over here (three guesses which one is my favourite). Usually MML caps are blurry unless you make them tiny but these are sharp and clear and good-sized. [livejournal.com profile] scally has now taught me how to get the same results: stop the video before capping. It takes longer, but I tried it today on something else and it worked! Yay!

  • Speaking of picspam, these are gorgeous:four hi-res pictures under here )

Oh, Martha. They're from this play which I had no idea ever existed. I really, really wish I could have seen it. I need a way-back machine. More pictures are here. Left click on "right click to download" to see the hi-res versions or, um. Right click to download. :)

  • Still not have seen OotP. I was supposed to today, but the friend I was going with didn't call me and I have to work this afternoon anyway. Bleh.

  • My hair is short. Like short. Maybe I'll post a picture sometime if I can have someone take one I could bear posting. I like the hair, mind you. It's just pictures of myself in general I can't stand.

  • Still not sure who I'm voting for in the Democratic primary, although Dennis Kucinich is saying some interesting things about some of my top issues, like health care, NAFTA, immigration and climate change. I don't agree with his take on all of the issues but for the most part I think he makes a lot of sense. I don't think he has a huge chance of winning the primary, let alone being elected President, but boy, he makes me think. I have to look at everyone else, too; he's just the one I started with because [livejournal.com profile] songdog said I should. *g*

  • Two cool bits of trivia I learned recently:

    • Keifer Sutherland's grandfather was Tommy Douglas.
    • Andrea Yeager is now an Episcopal nun.
primroseburrows: (dS: fraser hallelujah)

  • Meme from [livejournal.com profile] ceilidh ( btw, if you ever decide to change your lj name, dear, let me know. I want this one. :))

    1. Grab the nearest book.
    2. Open the book to page 123.
    3. Find the fifth sentence.
    4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
    5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1).
    6. Tag five people.

    • These cuts, and two-tiered health care, have been continuously supported by almost every major newspaper in Canada for over a decade, including the Globe and Mail, the National Post, and the rest of the CanWest chain.

The Conservative Party under Stephen Harper's leadership is clearly against universal social programs, notwithstanding its cries of indignation after the Supreme Court ruling. Harper told the House of Commons on October 28, 2002, that privatized health care is a "natural development." This mirrors an interview he gave in 1997 to the National Citizens Coalition newsletter, The Bulldog, in which he said, "It's past time the feds scrapped the Canada Health Act." The National Citizens Coalition, with which Harper has long been associated, advocates that corporations and charities take over the social functions now performed by governments (exactly the position of the Bush White House) and believes that the government's role should be limited to national defence, protection of private property, and law enforcement. The corporate-funded, Vancouver-based Fraser Institute considers Canada's social security system both immoral and an inefficient use of taxpayers' money. It advocates a mix of private and public charity for the "deserving poor" and has lobbied for a new definition of poverty that would apply only to those families who lack the "basic necessities for absolute physical survival."

--Maude Barlow, Too Close For Comfort: Canada's Future Within Fortress North America.

I blame [livejournal.com profile] fspider, in the nicest way. Erm, for the book rec, not for Stephen Harper being evil.

  • I'm finally going to get to see Away From Her. Will review later. Last time I got lost on the way to the theatre. Tonight I'm going to the Cable Car Cinema (which is the coolest place!), and I know where that is, so I should be okay.

  • In some meme, I told someone I'd talk about some of my icons. I think it was [livejournal.com profile] on_a_hill. I can't find the post. Help?

  • Also, GIP! Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] troyswann's love letter to [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup's love letter!vid (first one on the list at her site). I also made this one last night, which I'm waaay too proud of:

I now have eleven icons with Fraser in them; nine are just of Fraser. Maybe I should stop now?

  • Still need to see the dentist. I'll be into full-blown abscess territory if I don't, liek, soon. And um. I'm sort of going on vacation sorta soon. Ow?

  • If it's cool enough tomorrow, I plan on shutting out life and writing. It's been too hella hot to do it this week, and I do want to get my [livejournal.com profile] ds_shakespeare fic done.
