primroseburrows: (rick mercer)
I am not responsible for my latest change of LJ name. If you must blame someone, blame [livejournal.com profile] mrs_laugh_track. She gave me no choice.

Also: GIP! [livejournal.com profile] dragonflymuse made it for me because I was bereft of a Rick Mercer icon and because she's all talented and generous like that. :D

  • Meme from [livejournal.com profile] ceilidh ( btw, if you ever decide to change your lj name, dear, let me know. I want this one. :))

    1. Grab the nearest book.
    2. Open the book to page 123.
    3. Find the fifth sentence.
    4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
    5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest (unless it's too troublesome to reach and is really heavy. Then go back to step 1).
    6. Tag five people.

    • These cuts, and two-tiered health care, have been continuously supported by almost every major newspaper in Canada for over a decade, including the Globe and Mail, the National Post, and the rest of the CanWest chain.

The Conservative Party under Stephen Harper's leadership is clearly against universal social programs, notwithstanding its cries of indignation after the Supreme Court ruling. Harper told the House of Commons on October 28, 2002, that privatized health care is a "natural development." This mirrors an interview he gave in 1997 to the National Citizens Coalition newsletter, The Bulldog, in which he said, "It's past time the feds scrapped the Canada Health Act." The National Citizens Coalition, with which Harper has long been associated, advocates that corporations and charities take over the social functions now performed by governments (exactly the position of the Bush White House) and believes that the government's role should be limited to national defence, protection of private property, and law enforcement. The corporate-funded, Vancouver-based Fraser Institute considers Canada's social security system both immoral and an inefficient use of taxpayers' money. It advocates a mix of private and public charity for the "deserving poor" and has lobbied for a new definition of poverty that would apply only to those families who lack the "basic necessities for absolute physical survival."

I blame [livejournal.com profile] fspider, in the nicest way. Erm, for the book rec, not for Stephen Harper being evil.

  • I'm finally going to get to see Away From Her. Will review later. Last time I got lost on the way to the theatre. Tonight I'm going to the Cable Car Cinema (which is the coolest place!), and I know where that is, so I should be okay.

  • In some meme, I told someone I'd talk about some of my icons. I think it was [livejournal.com profile] on_a_hill. I can't find the post. Help?

  • Also, GIP! Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] troyswann's love letter to [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup's love letter!vid (first one on the list at her site). I also made this one last night, which I'm waaay too proud of:

I now have eleven icons with Fraser in them; nine are just of Fraser. Maybe I should stop now?

  • Still need to see the dentist. I'll be into full-blown abscess territory if I don't, liek, soon. And um. I'm sort of going on vacation sorta soon. Ow?

  • If it's cool enough tomorrow, I plan on shutting out life and writing. It's been too hella hot to do it this week, and I do want to get my [livejournal.com profile] ds_shakespeare fic done.
primroseburrows: (dS: Frannie pink)
[livejournal.com profile] isiscolo gives good fic. Any of you that have read her work know it. You've probably read this one, too, but I'm gonna rec it anyway, in case you haven't. It's my second time reading, and I love it even more this time.

It's a dueSouth/Wilby Wonderful crossover (a world of yay!). Rated PG, so it's safe for pretty much anyone over twelve (in fact, every twelve-year-old on the planet should see dS AND WW). Best of all, it's Frannie-fic, which is a sub-genre whose numbers should increase. I love Frannie, and I agree with the fic's premise: Frannie's fate wasn't to raise six children alone; it's not what she would have wanted. (I am completely for SAHMs, btw, but it wasn't Frannie's calling, not at the End of Things).

You don't have to know anything about Wilby Wonderful at all (except that if you haven't seen it, you should, on a day when you need some serious cheering up)except for the fact that Buddy French looks amazingly like Benton Fraser (they even have the same initials, wtf?) and Duck MacDonald is what Ray Kowalski will look like in ten years.

Basic knowledge of at least the premise of dueSouth is helpful, but I guess the biggest thing to know is that Frannie's been carrying a torch the size of the CN Tower since the day her brother dragged Fraser home for dinner. And she deserves so, so much better than that.

God, I'm wordy. Just go read it, 'kay? I'll be cleaning my kitchen. No, really. Oh, and read the story notes at the end. They link to her LJ, so you can tell her how much you love the story. :)

If you can see where you're going, you might just get there

Also GIP!. Frannie in pink by [livejournal.com profile] buzzylittleb. I've been wanting a Frannie icon, and this one's gorgeous. Better than anything I could ever do. :)

Inspired by this lovely thing, which I've loved since I was about thirteen:

Paul McCartney - Junk

Can't. Stop. Playing. Prettypretty.

Well, it seems when I posted this, I neglected to provide an actual link to the programme on circumcision (which is pretty centrist, when you get past the baloney, and has a lot of History). You can find it in the post, and also here.

Also, OMG. When I posted my Car Saga Massacre (with Five Part Harmony and all the Phenomena) I forgot to mention one of the most important parts!

After the Ordeal with the cop and AAA and towing and all, my intelligent, lovely, sweet, caring daughter [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah came and picked me up at the garage after I called her and told her my sad tale. It was pouring rain, and she helped me schlep my stuff out of my dead car and into hers (Go ahead, covet the car. I do!). Her friend Lauriye was there, too (alas, I have no link for her. Perhaps [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah can locate one sometime).

I am sorely amiss in not making this a part of the post (although, did anyone actually READ the post? I wish LJ would get a hit counter or something). [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah rocks exponentially.

Also I want to make a new LJ layout, as I don't like the way this one is done, especially font-colourwise. Any good non-LJ links for a tutorial? I'm hopeless at this kind of thing. So something like "Layouts for Dummies" would be great.

Oh, and last but not least, GIP! It's made from a photograph by Harriete Hartigan, whose work I've known and loves since Mary was a baby (read: early 80s). You can look at more of her photographs here. Maginificent, moving photographs. I hope I did the credit thing right on the upload of the icon, so she can get the credit, because the work is SO not mine. Everyone go look at her pictures, especially you crunchy moms on my flist.
