primroseburrows: (BSG: The OTHER k/l)
Random post of randomness, now with Numbers!

  1. Hannah called me at least four times today (technically yesterday) from her car, in which she had been lost in Boston for quite a while. I had to look up directions for all the different streets she found herself on. And by 'found herself' I do not mean 'discovered the meaning and purpose of life on Mass Ave.' but rather 'took a random detour because driving in Boston SUCKS'. I think she found her way out because the last I heard she was seeing Mass. Pike signs. Geez.

  2. Last night we had to have Baby, my niece Veronica's very sweet but very sick 13-year-old kitty put to sleep. It was sudden and sad (she had an only recently diagnosed tumour in her abdomen and the vet says she probably had a stroke because of it). On the way home from the vet ER Veronica asked us (her boyfriend Alex, who was driving, and me), if she could put on a song as tribute. The logical expectation would have been 'Stray Cat Strut' or something felinesque like that. But no, the song she played was 'My Way' by Frank Sinatra. My response: 'Okay, that's the only time I've heard that song used as a tribute to a cat'. Even Veronica was amused by the concept, which helped cheer her up some. I wonder what Sinatra would have thought of the idea.

  3. I was supposed to go to Mary's first official appointment with the midwife but [livejournal.com profile] mr_t00by couldn't make it back in time for me to use his car, so she had to go by herself. I'm pretty upset about it, but I really can't do anything about it. I'll go with her next month. :/

  4. OMGBSG. Now we have to wait until next year? *flails*

  5. Holy shit. Could this actually happen? I mean, woah. Iraq might just up and kick us out? I repeat: Holy shit.

  6. U.S. Supreme Court backs Detainees' Rights, a.k.a. Constitution 1, Bush Regime 0. \O/

  7. Credit where credit is due: Stephen Harper Does a Good Thing. Seriously, I was glued to CPAC for a solid hour on Wednesday and was blubbering through most of it (and how much do I love Mary Simon?). Real history, being made right in our back yard and it barely made a blip on the news radar. Last February, Australia did something similar. It's not all that needs to be done, but it's a heartfelt start. So, yeah. I'm thinking it's way past time for the US to apologise for what we did to OUR First Nations and make some history of our own.

I woke up early this morning, which is odd, because usually it's afternoon before I'm out of bed unless I have to be.

Today is [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah's birthday (yay!), and I've been thinking a lot about what it was like to be her age, with this whole...universe opening up in front of me. I was married at her age, and isn't that weird?

So anyway, she's up at school this weekend, and this morning it hit me that wow, she's the same age as a lot of the people who were killed at Virginia Tech. And ever since yesterday, every time I think of them, think about all those universes taken away and especially the ones left behind, I keep hearing the same song in my head like it's on repeat loop. So, I'm posting it here because it's a beautiful, triumphant song and maybe I'm supposed to share it and because I really think if the guy who wrote it were asked to give some words of encouragement, this might just be what he'd offer. And it's really for everyone, because like Neil says, there are no Other People. It's all us.

Stan Rogers - The Mary Ellen Carter

And you, to whom adversity has dealt the final blow
with smiling bastards lying to you everywhere you go
Turn to, and put out all your strength of arm and heart and brain
and like the Mary Ellen Carter rise again.

[livejournal.com profile] croosa just linked me to this wonderful thing. Dude. It's actually written by the guys who created TMNT. It's gotta be good.

Trailer here.

I'm waay too excited about this. I wonder if [livejournal.com profile] mr_t00by knows about it.

Also? [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah called me last night from a Rolling Stones Concert, just to tell me she was there. She didn't get to see much, because she was doing something for Habitat for Humanity. But it was cool that she called. Does she know her mum or not?

My first question: Did they do "Paint It Black"? Because, well. Of course I'd ask that.

I hope they played Memory Motel, because it's all "Hannah baby was a honey of a girl". Which of course, she is. *loves* And of course, if they played it, it'd be without the coolness of the Dave Matthews Factor. :/

Oh, and. [livejournal.com profile] on_a_hill is getting a "music of your life" CD exchange together. I am very excited, but OMG. ONE CD? I'll need more than one. The Ten Songs That Mean The Most To Me In The Entire Universe take up one CD. *angsts*

Oh, and #2. Speaking of said Ten Songs, I've been thinking about what my favourite song is, because I've never really had one single favourite song. If I have to pick one, I really think it's Writing. And gee, it only took me thirty a few measley years to figure that one out. 'Course, it's best with the two songs that come after it, but on its own, yeah. I think it's my favourite. Of course, you needed to know that, right?

Ah, the heck with it. Here's the entire album:

Elton John and Bernie Taupin - Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975)

Just leave the last three songs off when you listen. They're just tacked-on songs that I don't understand. Not part of the original album. Save 'em for later, because they're still cool. They're just not part of the Saga.

This dorky post was brought to you by [livejournal.com profile] croosa and [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah, who rock my world, truly.

Going now. *geeks out, stage left*

Well, it seems when I posted this, I neglected to provide an actual link to the programme on circumcision (which is pretty centrist, when you get past the baloney, and has a lot of History). You can find it in the post, and also here.

Also, OMG. When I posted my Car Saga Massacre (with Five Part Harmony and all the Phenomena) I forgot to mention one of the most important parts!

After the Ordeal with the cop and AAA and towing and all, my intelligent, lovely, sweet, caring daughter [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah came and picked me up at the garage after I called her and told her my sad tale. It was pouring rain, and she helped me schlep my stuff out of my dead car and into hers (Go ahead, covet the car. I do!). Her friend Lauriye was there, too (alas, I have no link for her. Perhaps [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah can locate one sometime).

I am sorely amiss in not making this a part of the post (although, did anyone actually READ the post? I wish LJ would get a hit counter or something). [livejournal.com profile] i_am_a_hannah rocks exponentially.

Also I want to make a new LJ layout, as I don't like the way this one is done, especially font-colourwise. Any good non-LJ links for a tutorial? I'm hopeless at this kind of thing. So something like "Layouts for Dummies" would be great.

Oh, and last but not least, GIP! It's made from a photograph by Harriete Hartigan, whose work I've known and loves since Mary was a baby (read: early 80s). You can look at more of her photographs here. Maginificent, moving photographs. I hope I did the credit thing right on the upload of the icon, so she can get the credit, because the work is SO not mine. Everyone go look at her pictures, especially you crunchy moms on my flist.
