The Belgariad for me is nice, but it doesn't exactly stand up, especially as some of the characterisation is fiddled with in the Malloreon and the prequels. It's like in Trek fandom, comparing TOS to the movies.
I don't think it's the best writing I've read (the guy doesn't know how to say what people are wearing, for instance, without saying "he was wearing..."). But the story is good. And there are some strong female characters. Okay, one. But like I said, I haven't gotten that far yet.
I think the reason I love Pol so much, so far, is that she reminds me a little of Delenn, my original Great Fictional Love. *g*
Yeah, I do, actually. Delenn has a similar humour and stubbornness. And they're both beautiful, strong women who don't take any crap from anyone(I can hear Polgara saying "be somewhere else!"). They're not identical, but they have a similar...energy, I guess. MO only, of course.
I haven't watched the DVDs yet (next on my list to buy!), but I can't imagine not loving Delenn as I do.
Well, the DVDs haven't really changed my mind about the characters, but sort of the series as a whole. Because watching each episode in turn makes one see all the bad bits and you can't just trust to memories of the glory days anymore.
At the same time I've been collecting DS9 on DVD, and that's been making me reevaluate B5 too, because honestly Season One of B5? *twitches*
