Dear US House of Representatives,
Please to be explaining this:
H.R.847: Recognizing the importance of Christmas and the Christian faith
In sincere embarrassment,
Me.
P.S. You might be able to redeem yourself here by passing a similar resolution for every other faith in the world, and their holy days, and also for atheists.

Date: 2007-12-14 05:36 am (UTC)There, there. Most people won't even notice. I mean, I found out today we have a whole new civic holiday next year, and if that's not the sort of thing everyone talks about . . .
But you know, House?

I'll notice. And I don't know if I like the idea that all these bills and resolutions pass and nobody knows about it but politicians. What if they pass one that's even worse and we're sitting around knitting?
I mean, I found out today we have a whole new civic holiday next year
Canada gets another day off. We get Ignorant Bigotry. Woe.
Don't they know we'd really rather have another long weekend? Silly government.

Date: 2007-12-14 05:54 am (UTC)I promise that Canada has passed stuff at least as stupid. *sigh* I mean, we have government-funded religous schools. The Tories wanted to introduce more.

Date: 2007-12-14 06:00 am (UTC)Canada (well, some of Canada) wants Muslim women who wear veils to remove them when they vote because they say not seeing their face is conducive to voter fraud or something when hello, absentee voters cast their votes without anyone seeing their faces. So yeah, Canada's not exempt.
I just like the day off idea.

Didn't someone running for premier of Ontario use words like "faith-based"? *shudder* Also, there is something very amusing about a Tory named Tory (he was the one with the brilliant idea about faith-based yadda yadda, IIRC).

Date: 2007-12-14 05:48 pm (UTC)Fail. And we vote with golf pencils behind short cardboard things in full view of the poll workers. How much fraud is there, really?
And regardless, fail.
Yes, John Tory and his faith-based schools. Needless to say they lost a lot of core votes over that one.
Our new holiday is "Family Day." My eyes roll forever. Why the HELL do they not make Remebrance Day a stat holdiay already. Huh? *mutters*

Date: 2007-12-14 02:47 pm (UTC)Now, Eid and the Muslims, THEY could use a resolution like this. Or Yule and the pagans. Or, since I just heard about two Jewish guys who got the stuffing beat out of them on a NEW YORK subway (?!?!?!!!) because they said "Happy Hanukkah" to people, maybe Hanukkah and Judaism. Or... well, heck, pretty much everybody EXCEPT us Christians.... Oy.
(Am so hugely relieved that no Virginia people signed this thing. There's hope for my oft-red state yet!)

Date: 2007-12-15 12:36 pm (UTC)Oh, I think you're right. The problem for me is that it makes Americans look like exclusionary bigots. And for the most part, American people aren't like that. I'm also fiercely defensive of the First Amendment and get testy when it's trifled with like that.
