Aaand now for the big reveal!

[livejournal.com profile] elementalv wrote A Partner Called Ray (F/K, PG) for me! And it's a crossover! And there's Dead!Bob, just like I wanted, and all sorts of wonderful other things, like good writing and everyone being all IC and all. Everyone go read it and tell her how cool she is.

Also, for the four of you who couldn't tell, my DSSS fic is First Day of my Life (F/K, PG-13, written for [livejournal.com profile] ximeria).

When I was frantically finishing it up (last minute as usual, at my mother's house on Block Island without my own computer or a room of my own to write in), I swore I would NEVER do DSSS again. IIRC, It's what I said last year, too. I'll almost definitely do it again, though. It's like having a baby, sorta. It's good pain, it's creative pain; the kind that's forgotten as soon as it's done.

This is the video that inspired the thing, and even though I've linked to it before I'm doing it again because it's such a beautiful vid that everyone needs to see it (and I dare you not to get at least a little teary, in a good way):

SEE? ISN'T THAT GORGEOUS?

And eep! I almost forgot! [livejournal.com profile] dragonflymuse, I got your present! I love it! I'm going to stick it on my new coat and confuse the heck out of my co-workers. *hugs and twirls*

Holy moley, I actually wrote an entire fic. For an actual challenge. And got it in before the deadline.

Here's the link, if you're interested. It's not Shakespeare, but it probably won't make you sick:

Fit to Burst (Fraser/Kowalski, rated PG or so).

  • If someone doesn't use this in some sort of crackfic, it'll be a crying shame.

    • Oh, and speaking of fic:

Moments by Veronamay. She says it's "mostly gen"; I think it's a little more complex than that. And gods, it's gorgeous.

  • Paul Gross needs a blog. No, really, he does. Think about it this way: Neil Gaiman is this intelligent, outspoken, enthusiastic guy. He has a million ideas in his head and he likes to talk about them, so he uses his blog to do just that. If it works for Neil, why wouldn't it work for Paul, who's also an intelligent, outspoken guy with a million ideas in his head that he likes to talk about? Hey, I'd read it. He could call it "A Bizarre Unholy Collision Between Art and Commerce" (accessible at bucbac dot com).

  • While we're on the (semi) subject, I realised earlier that in yesterday's post I linked to a picture of Stephen Harper in a cowboy Hat (this picture just had to have been taken during a campaign trip to Alberta).

    • Now. Willie Nelson is much more of a cowboy than sai Harper will ever be, so he deserves to be showcased in a hat, as well:

    • Also, Paul Gross looks better in a cowboy hat than Harper, and was actually born in Alberta:

    • He also makes a prettier PM:

  • [livejournal.com profile] patchfire and [livejournal.com profile] peacey: I'll be around tomorrow evening for Holiday Plan Discussion.
primroseburrows: (last night)

  • Is Benton Fraser gonna have to choke a bitch?. Fraser would never have sanctioned this. Darn him for being all fictional and stuff.

  • Now that the Due South Secret Santa authors have been revealed people are starting to link to the ones they wrote. I don't think this is mandatory, right? In any case, Light the Sun is mine, GIANT GIANT TYPOS and all. (yes, Virginia, I DO know the difference between 'there', 'they're', and 'their'). I blame the fact that I waited until the last minute to post it and was crunching the deadline. [livejournal.com profile] patchfire was oh, so patient with me saying, "I can't look at that link, I have to WRITE!!!"

I kind of figured that when people read the part about the card game from back east, they'd figure out it was me. But then I realised, maybe not, because, um. It's not like it's common trivia knowledge or anything. *g* The game (because I know you're practically dying of curiosity here) is Tarabish and really does have confusing terms and scoring and just rules in general.

The whole scene came from an actual game experience. There I was in Scotchtown in the middle of winter, the only non-Caper in the room, me and my little Great Big Giant cheat sheet, trying to wrap my ADD-laden brain around it all. Eventually they took my papers away and made me play without them. Needless to say I lost, very badly, despite everyone else being far drunker than I was (because I couldn't drink the moonshine and therefore stuck to wine). I had a good time, nonetheless.

I'd still love to learn to play better, so if anyone who a.knows how to play and b.lives near me wants to play, I'm all for it. I'll need three of you, though, to make a [insert obscure word that probably exists meaning "two pairs of players necessary for Tarabish"].

Also, I'd really like to repost my story on the archive without the typos and with a couple of other authors' notes. I'll be asking the mods about that soon.

  • I have three things to watch. Well, more than three if you count EVERY EPISODE OF BSG. [livejournal.com profile] elementalv's BSG-DS crossover fic has made that one imperative. [livejournal.com profile] melpemone, I'll let you know how my download of your upload (doo-dah, doo-dah) came out tomorrow, because finishing that one's the first priority at the moment (I've seen like five minutes, so I can't tell yet, but it looks good so far, clarity-and-soundwise).

Then there's this, which [livejournal.com profile] scriggle is sending me. *twirls her* I have an electronic copy (yay, fast!interwebz!), but I bet the hardcopy will have even better picture quality. I've only seen a few minutes of that, as well. I got to just about where this screencap is from, and figured I'd be wise to put it away while I still could. Mnrglf. ([livejournal.com profile] malnpudl, I can hear you muttering about how predictable I am from here. *twirls you as well*)

But my house is (fairly) clean, I just have to clean my room (because it's a firetrap at the moment, omg), so I should have time for some day-off media-watching marathonage. Yay!

  • I can't find my cellphone. This is a Problem, although not a new one. I know it's in my house, and I think it's in my room, so hopefully during cleanage tomorrow it'll turn up.

  • I've found two prospective places to stay in October. I want to stay at a hostel, and apparently the Cabot Trail Hostel, which looks very nice, and is quite cheap. I need cheap because I'm staying for at least a week (a side trip to Toronto on the way back is not out of the question, so money is an object for sure). The other place I looked at is Bubbles Bay B&B, which looks so pretty and quiet and things and I'd rather go there, but it's twice as much money. It's technically not a hostel, even though I found it on a hostel search site.

  • Capèrçaillie are god, may it do ya fine.

Question:

Is this available for download anywhere? I'm going to try for a torrent, but it'd be easier if someone actually had the file.

My inner Incredible Geeking Woman and my ever-growing adoration for the brilliance that is Don McKellar would be ever so grateful.

In other news, I want to stay home and write, not go to work. [livejournal.com profile] llassah and I were discussing pastiche!fic, and of course strayed OT, and now I've got "Geoffrey Tennant and the Terrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" stuck in my head as a title, which I'll probably leave to her to write because she's so much better at it than I am. :) This idea is not quite as brain 'splodey as the idea of Geoffrey as a contestant on Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me's "Not My Job" section, which [livejournal.com profile] sam80853 thinks I should write.
primroseburrows: (Helen)
Good article about the censorship of Helen Keller's life story here:

The Truth About Helen Keller

I read The Story of Helen Keller when I was no older than nine (and yay, that's my review on top! I am a geekdork. I also give my real name out on Amazon.com, go me). I completely fell for her because of this book, another one called Helen Keller's Teacher, and the novelisation of The Miracle Worker.

None of those books told me anything about Helen's life and work as a socialist and activist for suffrage and pacifism. She protested WWI, and maybe that's why this part of her biography was censored, I dunno. I didn't find out about the activism stuff until much, much later, and it pisses me off. No matter what someone's political opinion is, or even a nations opinion, shutting off an important part of someone's life story is pretty close to evil.

Oh, and speaking of WWI, Dan Radcliffe will be starring in My Boy Jack, which is about Rudyard Kipling and his son and WWI (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] taradiane for the link). Considering my lefty/pacifist leanings, it's ironic that I love a good war film. Well, that is if they're done right and not lying about being a war film like Pearl Harbor (ewwewwewwwww) did, or promoting an agenda like most of John Wayne's films did. I loved M*A*S*H, film AND TV series, both of which had an agenda the size of Spain. But hey, it's an agenda I agree with! I never said I wasn't petty.

So. With Dan's movie (or is it a TV-film?) coming out the same year as Passchendaele (which I'm almost positive is a definite thing. Right? Right?), there will be two films about war that *gasp!* aren't coming from America, or even about Americans, for that matter. Which will mean that I migh not even get to see My Boy Jack until the DVD is released (if it is), and I'm going to have to Travel for Passchendaele, because most likely "A theatre near you" means somewhere in New Brunswick. Not that traveling to the Maritimes is a BAD thing, but I'm already going there the month before.

I'm not holding out for a U.S. release of either of these films (if Dan's movie is a cinema production). The American public as a whole just ain't gonna turn out in droves for a couple of war films made in other countries about battles they weren't even invited to (it's interesting that neither film is up at imdb.com, which lists everything, even movies that *might* be made). I would, but I'm a history dork. [livejournal.com profile] mr_t00by likes history, too. There's hope for the next generation after all. :)

*fangirls Current Music* I haven't listened to the Cranberries for ages. Apparently I'm going through a '90s music phase. *headbangs*

P.S. and completely OT: I'm stuck on this fic I'm writing. I made the mistake of going back and reading what I've written so far, and have decided I suck like a big sucking thing. I might think better of it tomorrow. I hope I do. I'm waay too wordy, and so is the fic. I desparately need sure could use a beta. I know [livejournal.com profile] patchfire will help me with grammar and style and getting rid of the Wordy McWord, but I'm still gonna need someone besides who knows the characters.

Anyway, it's DS, F/K, post COTW (Woah, that looks like a code). There is also Stella, who I do not kill off. And RayV. Iced tea makes an appearance. I should look at one of those beta lists floating around. Tomorrow. Domani.

This tiny thing took me only a few minutes to write. It's H/D, positively unbetaed, and extreme with the fluff. It's for [livejournal.com profile] slytherindraco, [livejournal.com profile] hpotter98, [livejournal.com profile] patchfire, and epsecially for the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] iridescent_ink, with so much love and admiration it's not even funny.
