  • If someone doesn't use this in some sort of crackfic, it'll be a crying shame.

    • Oh, and speaking of fic:

Moments by Veronamay. She says it's "mostly gen"; I think it's a little more complex than that. And gods, it's gorgeous.

  • Paul Gross needs a blog. No, really, he does. Think about it this way: Neil Gaiman is this intelligent, outspoken, enthusiastic guy. He has a million ideas in his head and he likes to talk about them, so he uses his blog to do just that. If it works for Neil, why wouldn't it work for Paul, who's also an intelligent, outspoken guy with a million ideas in his head that he likes to talk about? Hey, I'd read it. He could call it "A Bizarre Unholy Collision Between Art and Commerce" (accessible at bucbac dot com).

  • While we're on the (semi) subject, I realised earlier that in yesterday's post I linked to a picture of Stephen Harper in a cowboy Hat (this picture just had to have been taken during a campaign trip to Alberta).

    • Now. Willie Nelson is much more of a cowboy than sai Harper will ever be, so he deserves to be showcased in a hat, as well:

    • Also, Paul Gross looks better in a cowboy hat than Harper, and was actually born in Alberta:

    • He also makes a prettier PM:

  • [livejournal.com profile] patchfire and [livejournal.com profile] peacey: I'll be around tomorrow evening for Holiday Plan Discussion.

  • I have a new sofa! Well, it's really a second-hand sofa, but it's in really good shape and wasn't cheap new, and has just a tiny bit of wear and tear on one end. It's beige, so it'll go with everything, or I can put a slipcover on it. Or cool throw pillows! Also, it's comfortable and FREE! The only expense is the sixty bucks I paid to have it delivered. I'd even have moved it myself except that my apartment's on the second floor and I wouldn't have a clue how to do it no matter how many people I corralled into helping.

  • Today is the birthday of [livejournal.com profile] dragonflymuse, Willie Nelson, Stephen Harper, and Paul Gross. The latter two were born on the exact same day. I'm still not convinced there's no conspiracy here. They could be (fraternal) twins separated at birth. Although, *looks at pictures again* I rather doubt it. The conspiracy therefore must be political. Others born today:

  • In conclusion, Geoffrey Tennant.

[livejournal.com profile] starflowers wrote me fic!

Do not blame her for the really strange premise. It was my idea, which wasn't even really my idea, because it was inspired by an old post from [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine, wherein she lamented that due South seems to be the only fandom with Hockey AUs and that someone needs to rectify this and can you imagine Ron Weasley playing goalie? I actually like [livejournal.com profile] starflowers idea of Goyle playing goalie better because he's physically perfect for it.

Hockey Night at Hogwarts.

Standout lines:

Still, excitement was high among the students, who welcomed a chance to vent frustration as they waited for news from their families on the progress of the coming war and the loss of relatives in the preliminary efforts to stop Voldemort’s evil attempt to take over the world. A game which seemed to be a thinly veiled opportunity for bloodshed and violence in the name of sportsmanship seemed the perfect thing.

and:

Seamus summed it up quite well when he said, “Well, look at it this way. Why do we always get the Hufflepuffs on our side? As far as bloodshed, violence, and hockey go, I’d rather someone on my side who doesn’t flinch, whimper, and hide at the first sign of danger. Why do the good guys always get the weak and pathetic on their side while the bad guys get the ones with Unforgivables and, like, guns and swords and stuff?”

and the best one:

...it was a well-known fact that being at Hogwarts in his seventh year rather than dashing off to engage in battle frustrated Harry beyond belief. Unfortunately for him, his own plans of war had to be put aside. Mostly in the effort of plot, really.

I really would love to host a panfandom Hockey challenge, but don't know how to go about starting one. Can anyone who's done such a thing (fic challenges, that is), tell me how? Because, really, how cool would a hockey story be in, say, the Star Wars universe? Or maybe Hard Core Logo, or OMG, Slings & Arrows (I'd co-write this one if anyone wanted to take it on)? Any suggestions? Anyone want to co-mod such a thing? Deadline could be after the New year, so as not to interfere with [livejournal.com profile] yuletide or Seekrit Santa or any of the others. Whaddya think?

In other news, this (taken from here):

"There was a lot of wailing and crying about Chrétien saying, ‘don’t go into Iraq’ – and I happen to agree with him on that. It was an unnecessary engagement. All these people were saying ‘oh, no the Americans are going to hate us!’ Of course they’re going to say that they’re pissed off at us’ but it doesn’t mean anything. It doesn’t mean they're going to tear up trade agreements. They DO stuff with us. We’re interconnected. And we have a right to have our own opinion. We’re always trying to find that dividing line – and what I was kind of trying to say with H2O was that we have to watch it, because we live in the shadow of a gigantic power unlike the world has ever known. I would argue maybe even to rival Rome."

also

"I love that fact that the US media has been characterized as being lefty and anti-Bush, when I don’t see how he could have had an easier ride from the moment that he went into Iraq until very recently. Nobody was questioning if this was a good idea or not. And [Michael] Moore’s got a lot of young people engaged, so if even 10% of them go out and do something, that’s an accomplishment.”

and

"The corporate structure is not really particularly sympathetic. It’s not really a good symbiotic relationship – corporate structure and democratic structure. One, however, is vastly more efficient than the other. So it’s a logical solution that corporate structure would come to a certain extent to dominate how a democracy is executed."

Dear Paul Gross,

Please, please, marry me write a book on politics. I promise I'll read it and pimp it like crazy prevail upon others to do likewise.

I'll even buy the audiobook. Heck, It's entirely within the realm of plausibility that I might may get obtain that one first.

love,

With sincere and heartfelt admiration, I remain,

Me

P.S. I wouldn't be at all upset if one or more of the following terms were used contained therein: coup d’état, anarchic order, jurisprudence, asymmetrical federalism, primus inter pares, Electoral College, dictatorship of the proletariat, constitutional monarchy, new international economic order, Parti Québécois, proportional representation.

Honestly. Brain cells are SO the pheremones of geekdom.

Of course, the whole thing might be part of the suspected conspiracy mentioned in this post. I'm adding [livejournal.com profile] spikesloveslave to the list of people who shouldn't leave town. She, in fact, is more likely to be a co-conspirator than Willie Nelson, since she is Canadian and he is not. Of course, Willie could be using his American citizenship as a smokescreen. However, knowing Willie, it's probably another kind of smoke entirely. (OMG, see, [livejournal.com profile] patchfire? I told you I'd use the "weird willie nelson references" tag more than once)

Also, I am embarrassed to admit that I ate all of the chocolate cheesecake that [livejournal.com profile] tapped_trish sent home with me yesterday. I'm thinking PMS.

Now I have to restart Cuthbert because he's being weird and get off my arse or I'll be late for work.

In case anyone cares, and even if you don't, the answers to my fandom love letter meme are under the cut )

In other news, after fits and starts, I'm finally finished watching H20. Holy Jesus on a unicycle, talk about an edge-of-your-seat story. The sequel? Cannot be here fast enough. *bites nails*

Oh, and on a related (at least in the synapses of my weird and overactive brain) subject: Stephen Harper and Paul Gross were born on the same day.
They don't just share a birthday, may it do ya, they were born on the same day. Coincidence or Evil Plot? Discuss. (the fact that Willie Nelson was born exactly 26 years earlier may or may not be noteworthy).

In birth news, the news isn't good.

C-Section rate rises to 30.2% )

[livejournal.com profile] patchfire says this, and she's right:

"The rate, the article notes, has risen by half since 1996, undoubtedly a result of ACOG's reversal on VBAC. This is, quite simply, intolerable. Caesarean section is surgery and should be reserved for times when it is needed. Not when the doctor is impatient, or the non-medically necessary induction didn't quite take, or the bag of water has just been broken 'too long' without a sign of infection. Most authorities suggest rates should be somewhere between five and fifteen percent, depending on the source."

Also, listen to this. Finally, someone mainstream is admitting that External Fetal Monitors don't change the outcomes in any way except to increase the already outrageously high Caeserian rate, and that the only reason docs use them is so they won't get sued (the guy who invented them even said they should only be used for high-risk births). And it's nice to know that at even though EFMs are epidemic, at least the latest Stupid Gadget didn't getting accepted without question. NPR actually says "births that occur in hospitals", acknowledging that um, no, not all births do occur in hospitals. They do persist in calling birth a "medical event", though, which it is NOT, unless a. There's an actual problem, in which case the problem is the medical event, not the birth, or b. So many interventions are used by obstetricians (and yes, a lot of nurse-midwives) that it becomes a medical event.
